newbie in lancashire.

Firstly, hi there,

I have been looking into getting an air rifle for some time, this weekend I finally got a used but A1 Theoben Fenman (mid-power). I say mid-power, as when I bought it, the shop said it came in turned upto 22ft/lb. The shop has reset it to 11.5.

Anyway, i'm after some advice on maintenance/pellets etc I should use with this rifle.
I am also after a lockable cabinet, any advice at all.

The rifle is also fitted with a tasco 4x40 scope, is this any good (or am I just a terrible shot

cheers all

Just a thought. The Fenman you say was plus 20 ft/lbs which makes it FAC. I was of the understanding that once on FAC always FAC irrespective of the power it is developing now.
I could be wrong and stand to be corrected.

worried now !!!

Something I notice with the gun is a lack of serial number etc, it doesn't even say its a fenman. I only *think* this from comparing against their web site and reading the FAQ.

Where are the numbers if any, and also....

where do I stand on this, do I need to take the gun back or do I need a license.

I *really* dont want an FAC rifle as I have set up a rifle range in the back garden, up to 75ft long and wooded I don't want the hassles and inflexibility of an FAC gun.

The shop I bought it from told me that the gun is easily wound up via the screw at the butt end of the barrel.

any advice, maybe I should have looked into this further before jumping, I do *really* like the gun though, it is a work of art, hardly any recoil and silent.

I thought that only related to Section 5 firearms.
To quote the Police Guide:

Conversion of firearms
2.29 Section 7(1)(a) of the 1988 Act (as
amended by the 1997 Act) provides that if
any weapon has at any time been a weapon
to which section 5(1) or 5(1A) of the 1968
Act applies, it shall be treated as a prohibited
weapon regardless of anything done for the
purpose of converting it into a weapon of a
different kind. Thus a fully automatic weapon
such as a Bren gun which has been smooth bored
and adapted to single-shot would still
be classified as a prohibited weapon, as
would a pistol that had a 24 inch or more
smooth-bore barrel fitted to it.

Now an FAC air rifle will be classed as a section 1 firearm so I assume, rightly or wrongly, that you could derate an FAC to 12ftlb or less as long as the parts that made it an FAC were not in your possession/destroyed.

But I wait in anticipation of being corrected!

Anyway the info. on this is rather heavy going and I wish there was a guide for the layperson.

Regards,

When an airgun is rated as an FAC airgun it becomes a Section 1 firearm and will be rated as one forever.

The fact that it is now S1 rated proves the fact that it is cabable of producing more than 12 ft/lb.

I strongly advise that you get the gun tested and make every effort to keep within the law with respect to this. If it is indeed FAC rated, then the seller and the current owner are committing serious offences......

Best get that rifle checked out, it's a serious offence to own an unregistered weapon. Wouldn't take it back to the shop you bought it at, get it chronographed somewhere else (more objective point of view maybe?).

Andy, I saw the gun before you bought it and advised him on how to "adjust it".I am sure that he would not have sold it to you if he wasn,t absolutely sure that it had just been "pumped up" illegaly by a non FAC holder and wasn,t on ticket. The only reason he knew it was over the limit was because he checked it on a chrono before he sold it to you.Richard is a very honest and reputable RFD and would not put himself or yourself at risk of prosecution. He deals mainly in shotguns, rifles, ammunition and reloading components so his knowledge of airguns isn't as comprehensive as some dealers but he certainly isn't the sort who would do anything illegal.

Hope this helps put your mind at rest.

FTAO Cheeto.

Are you local to me, I live on the outskirts or Ormskirk. ??

I would like to learn to use this air rifle properly. Do you know of any local groups at all.

My garden will suffice to start with, its at least 75yds wide rather that 75ft,full of oaks and basically untouched woodland....no neighbours either ideal to learn in. But some theory or expert help is always apprecated.

Andy, I live in Tarleton so am not that far away. The nearest local club is Rivington Riflemen who meet at Horwich near Bolton. However since we are both the same age and into bikes perhaps you would like to come over some time and have a plinking session at my shoot.I do a lot of hunting with air rifle and fac so if you fancy a hunting trip that could also be arranged.Welcome to the sport and feel free to contact me for help or advice.
