On an earlier post I have espoused sensible licensing. This is a pragmatic view, if we hadn't got a weak screwed up Crime and Punishment system we wouldn't need it.
Reading the paper this morning :
1. 20 druggies in Bristol are responsible for 90% of the crime. £2K a week drug habit needs £1M thieving a year to feed it. They keep getting pulled, and keep going back to it.
Solution ? : 3 strikes and you're out. Lock the parasites up for good. This measure, in conjunction with a decent help system for those wanting to quit, should be just fine. If they don't want to quit - then put them away for good.
2. Woman killed in jewellery raid. No police on the streets, all filling in paperwork.. and when they do nick them, see point 1.
If we had both a decent police system, and a strong deterrent, (gun) crime would be falling rapidly.

Their families should be accountable for their expense whilst they're locked up, as is the system in the Bangkok Hilton.
If they don't pay, the prisoner doesn't eat - simple.

Well your getting it.......
They (the PC brigade) say they are all victims of society, utter bollax, they are the cr@p of our society.
Get all druggies in a room. Give them all enough gear to shoot themselves into OD world. The price for them to OD, is a far cheaper solution than jail or allowing them to continually steal from their neighbours.
A cheap, cremation (put all of them on a bonfire) they mean nowt to me.

Well they pay for it in America, so why not over here. Paying to keep people locked up is probably a better use of funds than a lot of the current government's programs.

The thing that I find absolutely astonishing is that we tolerate the fact that it's possible to continue to get drugs in prison. Whilst I'm sure it isn't a totally pleasurable experience being banged up, the fact that our government runs a prison system that allows inmates to get (or carry on getting) wasted while they're in there beggars belief.
If it takes some solitary confinement, denial of visits and daily drug tests, why oh why aren't they doing it?

Because I don't want to. Not hard to understand really.
If it is working wonders in the US then go and live over there and see how safe you feel.
I also have to wonder to what extreme someone will go to to avoid the 3rd arrest - you don't have much to lose if you will go down for life anyway.

No - I don't want to pay for it. Was that unclear?
If this marvelous system will reduce crime then surely the money saved can be spent on keeping the people in prison.
I am also up for the relatives paying.
But - get this - "I DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR IT".
I see my pay cheque with deductions every month and I seem to be paying quite a bit out already + I seem to be taxed on just about everything I buy + the council take a good chunk from me for the police etc. every month.
Most sane people would think very hard about crime if there was a three strike rule - I agree. The problem is - I don't think druggies are sane people.
