    Stolen AirGuns Register first draft.

Ok guys you wanted it here it is:

    http://airgunregister.plextech.co.uk

It's only in a basic form at the moment to show what we can do. The login for police is username<img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_razz.gif" alt="Razz" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:-->olice password<img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_razz.gif" alt="Razz" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:-->olice there is nothing on the success page at the moment but it is just to show that the page can be secured.

You can enter details of guns so please feel free to give me some data to work with.

The crim number will what you will be able to use to look up your own entries and delete the entry when you are reunited with your guns.

    Cheers,

    Ben

Hi Ben, very nice but! I am not sure about the login bit, I think it needs to be viewable by anybody, gun shops, members of the public, airgun clubs, anybody.
    That is my only critisism.

I hear you Kev, but OTOH, if it's viewable by theives, they'll know not to take their stuff to the gunshop to peddle, thereby reducing the chances of nabbing them.....

    Good work plex <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_wink.gif" alt="Wink" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:-->

Yeah I can see your thinking on this it's possible for me to have more than one user on that login so for the guys on here we could have one.

    Dunno open to suggestions.

First php and mysql I've done so it's cool.

Search should be working in a bit.

Also going to log all the entries and searches into different tables along with date time and ip address so if anyone unlawful uses it then there is some form of log.

    Cheers,

    Ben

Yes but if someone offers you a gun you can check to see if it is hot, the worst thing that can then happen is that they file off serial numbers, and then you know they are nicked, and the price will fall as no one will want them, end result Airguns won't be worth the hassle of nicking.

No, spot on. If we can make it as hard as possible for the thieving scroats to sell the guns then we win.

Think Kev. is right. ANYONE should be able to 'browse' with only registered users being able to put on or amend records. Only one or two people should have high enough rights to delete, records, and then only errors.

    'Prevention is better than cure'.

The Police would say without a market (to sell to), most theft would not happen. If everyone knows there is a central register making the object easily traceable, would the thieves still take stuff? And then how long before the object was recovered. Any shop (not just gun shops) could check. Potential new owners could check. All using browse mode.

I'm sure Insurance Company's and BASC would pay a bounty [£10-£40] for any gun returned to its rightful owner if it saved them having to make a pay out against an Insurance claim.

Thinking about it, might BASC even be persuaded to fund the host site?

Ok well after I've got the basics working on the site i.e the searching and stuff. We can put it to a vote as to how open it should be.

I think only the admin and the person who entered a record should be able to edit or delete them which is why if searching to edit is only allowed on the crime number then only they and the police will know

Searching for a rifle believed to be stolen will of course be on the serial number.

    Cheers,

    Ben

An extra field for details of when and where the guns were stolen from, and detailed description of gun/guns would be good.

    Why?

We are looking at the issue of either police recovering guns and having serial numbers or people being offered guns and looking up the serial numbers to see if they have been stolen.

As long as their is a crime number and contact which I would say should be the telephone number for the police station they were reported stolen at that is enough.

We want to hold as little information as possible.

    Cheers,

    Ben

Being able to put a photo on ( if poss )would be a good idea, as most rifles are quite distinctive.

Altogether a good thing, hope it helps anyone who ever "lost out", and that I never need it myself, touch wood, (on the back end of my GC.)

    Well done.

Without wanting to labour the point, what if there is no serial number? I don't know, but does every air gun have one. What if the thief has removed it?

A location (town) where the theft took place, would make someone in that area more or less suspicious of a 'bargain'. Unique identifiers (like a deep scratch on butt), could if necessary be used in place of an absent or removed serial number.

I'm guessing you're not enjoying this at the moment. But keep up the 'good' work. You're doing a job that would frighten most of us. So well done. And remember, "Nothing worth having comes easy".
