Just wondered if anybody else had experienced a similar phenomenon. Last weekend we were out at the club's range, which is a 100 yard job set in a quarry and used by everything from us to black powder (BIG BANG). It was gusty, and it seemed, after a bit of head scratching and 'I've no idea where that one went' that the wind was swirling around in various directions including downwards. As the wind blew across the top it presumably blew down into the quarry as well. Lots of shots were inconsistently low, hardly any were high.We had enough trouble with ordinary windage, never mind up and down windage(!) as well.We were firing from a covered position so a bit of wool dangly type thing would have been no use, I suppose we should have gone downrange and chucked bits of grass up/down in the air.

One of the other blokes shooting that morning had a Remington .308 with a moderator the size of a fairy liquid bottle. It still sounded like a circus cannon. He didn't seem to be too troubled by the wind...
