Old HW77 (.22) is it legal?

Hi all, new to this forum but not the Net and I have a few questions...

Firstly, I bought, approx 10 years ago a second hand HW77 in .22 cal for £120 in pristine condition complete with a tasco (yes I know, crap) 3-9 x 40 scope and a nice gunbag. Living in the centre of Manchester it somehow felt "right" to have a weapon of one's own (everyone else is armed to the teeth, why not me). Anyway, after the initial few weeks of travelling miles to do a bit of plinking, I laid the gun to rest in a cupboard and there it stayed. 18 months ago, my wife and I were lucky enough to be able to buy a small farm here on the Isle of Arran in Scotland so i now have my very own 58 acre shoot :-))). The only thing that concerns me is, is this rifle a 12ftlb model being I assume, 12-15 years old, or is it likely to be higher?

After so long a layoff, I realise it must be stripped and oiled/greased etc. and any O rings may need replacing. Can anyone suggest a decent online supplier of spares? The rifle feels just the same as it did all that time ago, the underlever action is still very smooth so there doesn't seem to be any compression cilinder damage.

Being a farm it also has it's own resident rat community who are in need of a little culling. What ammunition would you suggest I use and where is best (online) to buy from.

Sorry for wanting to buy online but being on the island, I only get to the mainland maybe once every two or three months.

    Any help gratefully received.

    Regards, Jeff.

For you first post m8 thats not on! Don’t think people on this bbs (including me) will take kindly to those sort of comments.

I would send to gun to venom to get fully serviced and have its internals sorted. Or if you are mechanically minded you could order the parts and do it yourself.
As for amo I use what ever the gun likes as accuracy is important when using an air rifle. But with rats who tend to move the second you pull the trigger so body hits are not uncommon then use something that has a hollow point.

Well I took the comment as a bit tongue in cheek.

    Welcome Jeff.
The 77 is easy to work on IF you are ok with spanners pin punches etc??

Chambers gunmakers have an on line ordering facility for spares (spring - piston seal - moly grease etc) a "kit" would be a good idea!!

Dont worry too much about the power of your rifle, (virtually all 77s imported into the uk were/are 12ft lbs mods) UNLESS some smarty pants had carried out some dodgy home "tuning" to increase it OTT??

As mentioned above the best job is to send it to Venom OR buy a venom home tuning kit - This way you will get legal performance and a smooth quiet shooting rifle.

    Regards

    Michael

Rapid, sorry if I offended you. It was meant as a joke, totally. I'm Manchester born and bred and everywhere I travel I get ribbed about it being "dodge city" and how easy it is to come by firearms there. Peoples conception of Manchester from the TV they watch and papers they read is that it is some sort of British Sarajevo where snipers lurk in every dark window. I've learned to take it with a smile and a little inner snigger at people's ignorace and not to let it bother me. So apologies to all, I will retire gracefully back to my little foxhole and leave you all to it.

Thanks to all for the help/advice.

    Lighten up eh?

    Regards, Jeff.

As has already been said get some venomising going, the 77 is a nice gun.
I have been to Arran for a few holidays and I love it there, such a nice Island, very jealous of you having your own farm to shoot on.

Have fun shooting and welcome to the bbs, I read you manc comment as a joke, but anything can be turned around so people are cautious of posting,

    Welcome to the bbs Jeff[/quote]

Well said that man! I know what you mean. I took it as a joke but the anti's wouldn't.

Welcome to the BBS Jeff. Excellent rifle the 77, but as everyone else is saying, buy the venom kit. You won't be disappointed. I think they come with instructions for self fitting. Not a hard job if your reasonably handy and have the tools.
    Steve.

    Or.....

Put a paper target out at @ 15 yards and practice putting a few pellets in it.

Then when you are doing that consistently then put a paper target out to @ 30 yards and practice again. You won't be far off your 2 'zeros' at these distances so if your gun was mint when you put it down 10 years ago the chances are there won't be a lot wrong with it now.

The Venom option is a good one but it will cost you @ £50+ for the DIY kit and you can best part of double that if you send it off.

If you are grouping @ half an inch at 15 and then under an inch at @ 30 then the gun is probably fine.....get blasting them rats.

Ideally you could try and get the gun put over a chrono when you are on the mainland.

    Good luck and welcome

    Bozzer
