Why does Danish oil make my stock smell?!

Whenever I've used Danish oil on a stock or wood in general it leaves a horrible chamois leather type smell, am I doing something wrong?

I've tried it on three different types of wood, and every time the same leathery smell- how long should I be leaving between coats?

Can't remember too much about work top- but think i left it 15 mins between coats and the last coat wipe off any excess.

A component of Danish oil is Tung oil, which smells a bit like peanut oil, to me anyway

Odd- I left it a good hour in the warm between coats. Just had a sniff of something I oiled a few months back and the smell seems to have gone.

The worrying thing about danish oil isn't that it might have been made from pigs or danish women, it's the small warning on the back that reads- "place oily rags spread out as leaving cloth screwed up could result in spontanious combustion"

You should always lay cloths out flat to dry after applying any oil not just danish as oil is highly combustable.

Have you been using old undercrackers to apply the oil?

I'm a painter myself by trade, almost finished my apprenticeship... when it comes to danish oil, your meant to wipe it on, leave it for a few minutes and wipe off the excess, then leave over night to dry before you apply further coats. I myself hate the stuff but thats another story.
