S410 - Scope Choice

Prior to Xmas I was led to believe that the "Mk2" S410 would be arriving imminently, so I reluctantly holstered my credit card and waited. However with Xmas now long gone the "Mk2" has still to show its muzzle. Very frustrating.

Now with spring on the horizon I feel I can wait no longer, so I'm going for one of the current .22 S410s. My only residual uncertainty concerns scope/mount choice.

While I'm only planning to use the gun for what I suspect will be undemanding bunny/magpie bashing, I'm keen to get a quality scope & mounts.

Research to date has caused me to lean towards the 2.5-10x42 Varmint from JSR.

Any comments on this choice would be welcome, as would advice on mounts (e.g will any old high 1 piece mounts do, or do certain types give benefits).

TIA

Andy

Won't you need 2 piece mounts?

Medium height will do as well.

I've got 3 2.5-10 Varmints.
Anyone would think I liked 'em.

The varmint will be fine, they're reasonable scopes for the money. Also consider Reflex 3-10x44 which is optically above average for it's price. It is a none PA scope though, so would need re-parralaxing for airgun ranges. Easy enough to do.

As to mounts I personally like BKL mounts as they accurately centre the scope over the action centreline. Sportsmatch or Pro-mounts will however suffice.

Medium height mounts will do for anything less than a 50mm scope. Unless the scope either is very long and/or has a very long eye relief you might find you need to have both mounts behind the magazine rather than one each side.

I use the B-Squared mounts as there's almost no chance of crimping the scope like the Sportsmatch can. The new BSA mounts look like they're made by B-Squared.

Ive got an S410 with a AGS 3-9X40IR on top gives a nice balance to the rifle and makes a good allround combo and the adustable illuminating reticle helps in dark woods, dim light or silloueted sitters in trees
You do have to play around with the mounts abit though as the magazine housing can get in the way of the scopes saddle on medium mounts - but it is worth it

Scope on the way...

OK, went for the 2.5-10x42 Varmint I. Still mulling over mounts. Best not to rush these things (and its raining outside anyway...)

Nice bit of feedback about the high/medium mounts, cheers folks. (i.e. mediums will do most things under 50mm)

My S410 has a Varmint 2 3-12x44 on high mounts, and they really are.... um.... rather high. Pain in the neck if you need to squeeze off a quick close range shot.

So I'm off to buy medium mounts now, to lower it down a bit. I suppose the worst that could happen is having to "customise" the objective end cap if it won't fit

s410 scope

l've fitted a 6.5-20x50 nite eye on medium mounts it just clears the barrel by about 3-4mm. The weight feels lovely on it(.177 carbine)

B-Square?

Does the geometry/design of the B-Square mounts differ from the norm, or are they just made to tighter tolerances?

I'm struggling to find (i) info & (ii) a UK vendor for them. Perhaps I need to look harder...

The Deben 2.5-10x50 is one of the best scopes I have used. It has a side wheel parallax and mil dot.

Very good for all round hunting and also for HFT if your interested.

I also have the 4-16x56 version and thats the bee's knee's

May be unpopular but I had a Varmint and didnt like it , thought the optics were poor , on the other hand I had a Simmons WTC on my s410 , cracking scopes.

The design is different as the top part is more like 270 degrees than 180 so it wraps right round the scope. The screws then go through it into the base at a steep angle. I get mine from Dowlings but plenty of shops are likely to have the new BSA versions, Woodys certainly had a few.
