NV Scope Questions

Hi All,

This is my first post to the BBS.

I have looked everywhere for these specs but can't find them for the D141 and NS156 NV scopes. Can anyone help?

I would like to know the light amplification and resolution (lines/mm) of each model if anyone knows.

Thanks

Clive

Go for the NS-156 The image is better and its alot cheaper

Thanks for the reply :-)

Thanks for the reply.

I've been there and many other sites but none of them have the info I need so I thought I would ask here in case any of you guys know the details.

Anyone?

Thanks

You need to talk to 'Steak & Kidney' (Sid)

Hi Clive,

It may be too late already, but looky here:

Today's special!

This is a serious bargain. Just a few quid more than a new 156, but the difference in quality is massive. Better range, but perhaps more importantly for 12ft/lbs airgun use, better resolution at closer ranges. So, fewer headaches & hallucinations.

Thanks for the info.

I've already got something on order. I was just wondering how it weighs up against what people on here consider to be the best GEN 1 sights.

What I have ordered is 2.5 mag, mil-dot red on green reticle, 1000 times light magnification and no less than 30/lines mm. Brand new manufacture tubes so no black spots, special power supply so no horrid whistling noise and no wandering black spots. Also its smaller and lighter than either of the sights people usually recommend. Oh plus built in 20mW illuminator. And weaver rail mount supplied in the price. Which was quite a bit less than the NS156 at £375!

Before you all say it's going to be ****e...I have managed to find someone else in the UK that has one and he says it the dogs ******** and can't believe how good it is.

I was just wondering what the specs on the Dipol or the NS156 were to see how it compares if anyone knows them?

If not maybe when I get it and someone local to Kent has an NS156 or Dipol we could do a side by side test.

Then again it might be a complete turkey...lol

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

Sorry Clive, mis-read your post; didn't realise the shopping was already done.

I have recently spent a good deal of time looking into NV before my first major purchase.

Only have info on the 141:

Generation
1

Optical Magnification
3.2

Field of View
15 degrees

Resolution (lines/mm)
30

Dimensions (mm)
192x68x55

Weight (g)
460

Battery
CR123A-Lithium (3V)

...but, as already mentioned here, Sid will know a lot more about both units. No doubt he'll spot the thread any moment now.

NS156 - 36 lines/mm

Thanks for the input guys. Looks promising for my unit. :-)

Now does anyone know the light amplification of the Dipol or NS 156? ;-)

I must confess the unit I have on order is slightly longer than the Dipol....I apologise.

Thanks again for all your input guys.

What model did you buy in the end? How do you get on with it?

Cheers

There are a couple of things that you need to know about the specifications used for NV devices.

1) Light gain quoted as a multiplication figure is meaningless. It won't tell you how the device performs in the real world.

2) Resolution in lp\mm is another meaningless term when it's applied to Gen I - because the figure quoted will refer to the very centre of the image only.
Gen I is capable of pretty high levels of resolution on axis, but towards the edges of the image there will be a loss of clarity and an increasing amount of distortion.
A simple lp\mm figure won't tell you how much of the image is useable. The quality of the optics, particularly the objective lens, is going to be the main factor here.

3) Brand new tubes have black spots. Gen I devices show less of them now than they did a couple of years back, most are pretty clean, but newness is no guarantee of spotlessness
People get far too hung up about spots IMO.
Far more important than black spots ( in this case ) are what I call 'sparklies' - this is a phenomenon unique to Gen I tubes where the centre of the image ( the good bit ) has points of light dancing around in it. The severity varies, often it's barely noticeable, but sometimes it can seriously degrade the most vital area of the image.

4) Special power supplies don't prevent wandering black spots - mainly because there is no such phenomenon as the wandering black spot

What I am trying to say is that you shouldn't pay too much attention to paper specifications when comparing Gen I scopes. My advice is to look before you buy.

PS - Mildot reticles in NV scopes aren't a very good idea IMO. The level of magnification on an average NV scope is so low that the dots have to be tiny and very closely spaced if they are going to end up 1 mil apart. The effect is like a line with bumps on it rather than a dot reticle.

Well, I got myself an ATN Paladin 390 Gen 1 jobbie. here

I quite like it but never seem to see anyone talking about 'em - are they any good ? Or have I just not looked through much else, so it's hard to compare ...? - am actually considering switching to something a little lighter though...

Cheers,

Thanks for the input Sid. I was just rehashing what the manufacturer quotes :-)

I guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say. I should just be patient really and wait for the thing to turn up.

When I get it I'll post some pics and findings.

Has anyone had any sucess taking pictures with a digital camera through a NV scope? I dont want to take specific pictures of anything, I just thought it might be interesting to see how they come out and give people an idea of the image quality so they could perhaps compare it with their NV scopes.

Cheers again.
