Full firearms review in the offing

Just got Gun Mart and I see that the government are planning a full review of ALL firearms legislation "early this year". This snippet comes by way of the Sportsmans Association. Now that Brococks are dealt with one assumes that something else will be in the firing line as it's difficult to see them just wanting to sort the anomolies out.
I suggest writting to your MP to determine the reasons for this review. I'll have my fax off before the weekend's out.

If ALL shooters joined BASC, mightn't there be:

a) More funds to fight our corner, and
b) More impressive statistics as to the numbers of organised and committed shooters (i.e. voters and potential voters!) out there

What do you think?

Yes, I'm a member; No, I have no other connection with them; Yes, I'm concerned that fragmented opposition weakens our potential to make our voice heard.

BASC had the highest membership increase in 10 years last year but did that help the brocock and young shooters among us, Did it hell..

Too late to have much impact (no pun intended!), but should help in future - especially if the trend continues (and increases further/ faster? ). The old line about "Divide and rule" holds true; if we don't have a single, organised voice regardless of whether we shoot targets, hunt, use airguns, firearms or shotguns, whatever.. then we'll be gradually cut off in small bite-sized pieces. For example, I wonder how many clay-pigeon shooters - say- would have protested against the Brococks ban (or even known about it?) Similarly how many airgun shooters care about the ban on lead shot for wildfowling? But ALL the anti's (and media) join in any time there's a gangland shooting/ airgun vandalism/ animal rights march, whatever - and the cry's always effectively the same "Ban them ALL!". If we don't unite we WILL fall - and it'll be too late then; try getting the Brocock ruling reversed now (fat chance!)

Legislation

Recent comments contained within some articles within "Shooting Sports" magazine have suggested that our friendly legislators might well have been looking very closely at the current legislation surrounding the "adjustable" power levels that can be generated by some of the more popular P.C.P rifles currently available . Lets hope that any " secret" consultations with the gun trade might have resulted in either no future action being taken , or at the very least , something that does not in future require a section 1 FAC. For the many enthusisats amongst us that hopefully will not have to go down the air cartridge pistol route , and have our pride and joy either destroyed or confiscated , lets hope that my thoughts are as negative and improbable as we would all wish . Andy .

Considering the government’s opinion poll ratings and recent media propaganda, it can only be a matter of time before Mr Blair attempts to pull off an easy political “victory”.
I have little doubt that there will soon be a legal push for either all airguns to be classed as firearms or “legal limit” power levels drastically reduced.
This is very sad for us, but will it get rid of the idiots shooting kids and cats?

I’m totally against any further restrictions on law-abiding shooters, but what can the government do to stop the ar$eholes? Like another 500 of you, I’ve signed the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/uksa/petition.html . However, would we not be more effective in protecting our sport if we helped to find solutions to the problem?

Just out of interest, does anyone know the death statistics for airguns and golf clubs?

The BASC certainly DID, and always DOES help shooters when new legislation is debated.

Your comment is totally unfair, mate. Yes, the changes were brought in, but the tremendous efforts of BASC and others certainly had an effect on the nature of the new regulations - and without these efforts our shooting freedom would be considerably diminished.

The fact is, however much we may disagree with recent measures, juniors can still shoot and TAC airguns can still be owned and used. Who do you think fought for this?

Please don't dismiss the untold hours of hard work BASC does on behalf of shooters of all kinds. I've seen their efforts in action and I regard them as our greatest ally in the battle against unfair legislation.

Join the BASC - and give it the power to defend the rights of ALL shooters.

Terry
