Range finding using AO scopes

Bought a new scope (Varmint 2.5-10x42 AO)

Just wonder how you use it to rangefind though. The instructions say you can use it to range find, but fails to say how.

Nice scope, went for it instead of the Airmax, as I could still use the medium mounts on my HW97.

    Alright mate?

Idea is, you view your target, then adjust the AO until it's in perfect focus.

Once you're there, look at the range marked on the objective bell and that's your distance

Quite often these distances aren't quite accurate so people often put a bit of tape on and recalibrate the distances using targets at known (measured) distances

And remember to use the maximum zoom power for this then turn it down to whatever you intend to use.

But, finally, 10x isn't really enough magnification...

...for more than the most rudimentary of short-range rangefinding, because the depth of field at 10x is quite large - making focus very insensitive to range for all but the nearest of targets. Beyond 25yards or so, you can prettymuch forget about it.

    thanks.

Not tried it yet, as its raining hard, no chance of sighting it in.

Doesn't seem like a very reliable/accurate way to rangefind.

I'll just leave it set to the average range I shoot at. Worked OK on fixed lense scopes.

    Thanks agin

Chris - with a big zoom scope (around 32 mag) you'd be surprised how accurate it is! And it gets better with practice.
