Old gun refurbishment Devalue Question ??

Just received a Lovely Mercury - S from Blackpowder on the forum lovely guy to deal with by the way, however i'm new to collecting my question is this:

The blueing is turning brownish which i guess is common of older guns, But no major rust or damage yet. BSA say they can polish and re blue the gun or I could send it away to a specialist to do, but would it devalue the gun ?? as i won't be hunting with it that often and not likely to get wet is it likely to rust now its turned a brownish colour. And is a reblue considered a no no in collecting.

Any advice on this would be great as I would like to hang on to the gun for my lifetime and give it to my boys, but don't obviously want it to rust or devalue.

Any advice from those in the know welcome.

    Many thanks
    Paul

Get it re-blued. These rifles are relatively common so unless it was an as-new, mint condition unused rifle you were thinking of re-blueing it is not really an issue. It's for using so get it done. ISP do a better-than-new blueing so if you want a class job send it to them.

    ISP

You'll also get an excellent job done (quicker and cheaper) by Col@Mag on here.

I suggest you take BSA up on their offer, providing the cost is reasonable.
You will then have a 'Manufacturers' finish on the rifle, which is always preferable to a collector.

Many thanks guys for the input BSA are charging £25 for a complete re blue and refurbish, which incomparision is very cheap, a big hep one and all. I've been tol that CS Airguns & Firearms are very good to they want £85 for a refurb & £20 for a reblue. http://www.csfirearms.co.uk/contact.php

Does ISP have a link would be of interest.

    Thanks

A reblue for £20 from CS Firearms is extremely reasonable, but a reblue and refurbish from BSA for £25 is exceedingly reasonable.
Are you sure you didn't leave a '1' of the beginning.
If that figure is correct, I know where I would go.

When I spoke with BSA servicing dept they definately quoted £25 for a full reblue & polish, but of course the gun in question is a BSA so perhaps its part of their customer service, I'll pack the gun up this week and send of with a chq inc.

I'll let you all now the result.

I've had several guns reblued now (ISP, Col@Mag and V-Mach) and the minimum I've been charged is £45 plus post, which, given the polishing and the work that goes into it is damn good value.

On at least on one I had it done to get rid of the 'factory' finish, though I can see the appeal of having BSA do it. I'd be interested to see the results.

I have just spoken to BSA, and the information I was given is as follows:
    A 'Service' for a rifle is charged @ £25 + Return Carriage + VAT = Total of approximately £38.
A 'Refurbishment' including re-blue for any make of rifle including BSA, is charged @ £35 + Return Carriage + VAT =Total of approximately £ 47.
Any rifle sent for Refurbishment must be stripped before being sent, and all parts for refurb. enclosed in the package.
Preparation for re-blue - cleaning, polishing etc. - are included in the cost.

    HHmmm now i'm confused

I just spoke to John at BSA today as well, and confirmed that if I sent the action to them (not stripped) they would reblue & polish for £25.00 but may not be able to touch in the enamel black piece that fits between the chamber and gun stock which i guess is fair enough , cs firearms said they could do this bit so i'll investigate that.

But 2 different prices from BSA on the same day ????

Still i'll send of with the £25 and hope they do it

    Cheers

I think the curved trigger block can't be blued or blacked - it is an alloy that would dissolve in the blacking salts! It has to be stove enamelled or painted, IIRC. You could probably do a good paint-job yourself if you fancied a go.

    trigger block

If the paint finish is damaged on the trigger block then the trigger block looks nice if the old paint is stripped off and the alloy polished. Do the whole lot including the trigger guard. The old paint comes off easily using Hammerite thinners
OR TO KEEP AS STANDARDclean the trigger block thoroughly and respray with Smooth black Hammerite. (about £6/can )Give it 5 thin coats and allow 15 mins between coats
Make the last coat heavier to give a very glossy smooth finish.
This paint hardens with time and after a few weeks is quite a durable finish.
Try not to scratch it in the first few days after spraying
    hold me back !!
