Having done a fair bit of lamping in the past I thoroughly enjoyed this article, brought back memories of trudging across a golf course in the dark with my m8. We'd take turns with rifle and lamp, experimenting with lines of approach in different conditions, the lamp consisting of a car spotlamp and a 12v bike battery and a tig welding torch switch.
Great fun though much better equipment seems to be available today

Wish to start lamping and wondering if it's that much better having a variable power lamp or just an on/off no thrills one?

I have not tried night shooting yet, but I have been looking at NV scope. Only trouble is the cost of £500 new £200-300 second hand.
I already own an led lenser compact single bulb torch which I could mount on top of my scope and I have bought a yellow flip up lens cover for it.
Is this good enough to use, as NV scope seems a bit OTT for a newbie like me.
P.S.
If anybody in essex area is planning a night hunt I would like to come along to see how to lamp & stalk.

A smidge off topic but I'd like to ask the question anyway.
I was once out with a mate lamping at 2am when it started to heave with snow. It was coming down like you wouldn't believe. We cut through a gap in a hedge and shone into a snow covered open field to see hundreds of wood pigeon feeding at 2am in a snow storm. This goes against everything I ever knew about woodie behavior. Anyone else here ever witnessed such a thing?
