    Browning Electric Airgun?

I've been offered a Browning 'electric' airgun - although I've read something about them, it was a long time ago. Does anyone here know anything about them and/or what price I should be paying?

Hi Paddy, hope all is good and going well with the wedding plans. I actually had a play with one of these three weeks ago. The spring is compressed by an internal battery operated motor that don't half make a bloomin' noise and takes an eternity to cock (and it seemingly eats batteries too ). Its firing cycle was quite smooth and quick for an umpteen year old however -- mind you, it should be as when new it was priced very close to the top of the air gun food chain. The one I played with was in .177 as I believe they all were/are (but if wrong hopefully someone will point this out ), and at a best guess (had no chrono with me), would guestimate it to be pushing out around 9ft.lb. The particular Browning I was flirting with was in absolute Lakey-esque mint condition and the guy who owned it was an ex-Browning rep who has since set up on his own. This rifle was not for sale as such, but it was mentioned that if he were to consider parting with it, the price would have to be for something the other side of £600. Hope this helps a little and keep in touch (Gareth).

The Browning Air Star? The last time I saw one of these advertised in one of the magazines a while ago it had an asking price of £200. (boxed, as new condt.)

That is more like it, £200 . The plucked from the air price of £600 + was most certainly a "well I don't really want to sell it but if someone was to offer me XYZ ..." Ha ha. Night all: Gareth.

    Browning

    Hi Paddy
A club member bought one of these about a year ago and brought it to the club to test it out and show it off
He had bought it new and i think he said he paid about £250
I love spring rifles, so I was keen to try it out.
My opinion after shooting the rifle was that it was 'horrible'.
It was heavy, noisy, not particularly powerful, and accuracy at 20 yards was very dissappointing. It also recoils just like other springers

I kept my opinion to myself as he had already parted with his hard earned cash, but after a couple of weeks he had it up for sale (at quite a bit less than he had paid for it) so he had obviously formed his own opinion and realised that although the gun had novelty value, it was not a shooters gun

I don't know how many were made and whether or not the rifle will become collectable, but I personally would say it was the worst air rifle I had ever handled or shot
Sorry to put a downer on it, but if you are serious about buying one, have a good long test drive if you can, perhaps the gun does have some good points and I just didn't see them

    Had mine for

about ten years and agree with some of the points raised cocking noise etc.
One big problem is that when fully charged, battery discharges through internal circuitry even when turned off [design fault].
Installed open/closed pushbutton switch on the battery line and overcame the problem.
Repaired about 4 Airstars with the same problem.
Quality of manufacture, blueing, accuracy, loading system on par with 10m German match rifles IMHO.

Many thanks for your comments - I should have said that if I was to buy it, it would only be because of its uniqueness as part of my collection, not as something that would be used regularly.

And now a Collectible because ..

....of exactly these reasons - what we try out one day and discard as not our type or worthless or simply bad , like a thousand other airgunners becomes with the passage of time 'collectible' as most end up unused or thrown away .
How many 'collectible' or rare Airguns are not actually very good shooters ....

There was a review in one of the mags when it first came out, and even then no-one could work out why anyone, (except the Yanks,) could invent such a useless monstrosity..! You can take this collecting lark too far, Paddy..!

if you really want one, you can have one that I've owned from new and never used except to test fire it for £160. no box, don't know where charger is but still have it somewhere, and can supply another unused gun in bits for spares for another £40.

my mates got a perfect example,he bought it to a plinking session at first the novelty had us all interested but after 10 mins of its whining as it recocked it was quickly put away before damage was done.
