Bushnell 4200 4-16x50 multi-X reticle

After purchasing this scope last week I mounted it straight onto my HMR. It replaced a Hawke Pro-stalk 5-20x50 that I had borrowed from a friend. On comparison it was immediately apparent how bright the optics are. When compared to the Hawke I noticed a 'white' bright look about the view and the Hawke suddenly appeared 'brownish' by comparison.

The body of the scope is well finished and the parallax adjustment is super smooth with a really high quality feel. The turrets turned positively and were easy to re-set although initially required pliers to loosen them. Once loosened for the first time they are finger re-settable for when out zeroing.

I got the scope/gun combo zeroed at 100m as the light was just fading. My last few shots were still on full mag (16x) at 100m with the target located under a tree, but it was still possible to see the 1/2" bull! I managed to shoot a drawing pin out of the target sheet and missed another by 1cm. This was made easier with the excellent light transmission and 50mm ob lens but also the multi X retilce really allowed me to bracket and centre the target despite being smalll. Those last 2 shots told me the combo was sorted!

The next test to follow was a lamping session on the rabbits. I unfortunately only had/have a logun ph lamp so this was to provide a greater test for the scope! I spotted a rabbit at 50m. The grass was long and all that was visible was its eye. On the bipod there was grass between me and the rabbit but on looking through the scope I could make out the shape of the rabbit. I located its head on the cross hair, the shot was rewarded with the head slap you are all too familiar with. 2 more ran immediately through the grass - 2 more head shots at similar ranges followed.

I shot 9 rabbits with 9 shots in the pouring rain using a low powered lamp on the first time out with this scope. I am very pleased with its light transmission and low light performance. I really like the multi x reticle despite only every using milldot in the past. It allows good centering of the target. The magnification when used on full keeps the clarity of the picture along with an excellent 'white' glow.

The 4200 series is a cracking set of scopes. Finally will be mounting mine tomorrow morning

Two things stood out for me with mine: the clarity as you say plus construction.

The turrets, for example, feel extremely positive with no "play" or "vagueness" in their operation.

I admit though that I am a wuss: I cannot see my new combo going anywhere near falling moisture from the sky.

Good review - would you know how that reticle's fine hairs compare with a 30/30 in thickness?

Unfortunately not mate, as I have had no prior experience with a 30/30 reticle.

some bloke - the 4200 ret is much the same as a classic 30/30 mate - certainly not much finer IME
