    Stupid Questions

    Good afternoon

After the really useful information regarding getting started, I have got most of the bits and pieces I need to get started (I think), Well I've got a bag of shiny things from Henry Kranks.

I am used to to reloading centrefire ammo so used to measuring powders by weight, I am a little confused by the whole measuring by volume thing though.

How doe this work in its simplest terms

I understand that I should be taking a starting weight of for example 12gns of Black Powder, measure the volume and then use this volume of pyrodex- is that right.

If it is, is there any way of converting this so I can use my reloading scales to weight out the equivalent volumes of Pyrodex.

Before someome tells me to look at the tub of pyrodex, that is in my cellar and I'm in work

    Thanks guys

Hoping to get my firs shots fired tomorrow night.

    John

The volume of one grain of fffg blackpowder is 0.0628 cc
The volume of one grain of pyrodex p is 0.0823 cc
To find the weight of pyrodex p that is equal in volume to 12 grains of fffg blackpowder; 12 x 0.763 = 9.156 grains.
    I hope that makes sense!

Well I'm going to finally get to try it tomorrow I hope.

16gns by weight of pyrodex- about the same as 21gn by volume of fffg if my calcs are right.

Think I've got all I need to atleast get some smoke going down the range

    Chart for converting

    http://www.curtrich.com/BPConversionSheet.htm

Worth printing out in case it disappers off the web.

    16gr pyro = 23.5gr BP

    ?

When I read right to left from 16.4gns of pyrodex is the same as 20.4gns fffg

    What is Pinnacle FFFG?

Does that mean the calculation above for converting grains by volume of BP to Grains by weight of Pyrodex is wrong?

Good point, pinnacle is another substitue.

    http://www.goexpowder.com/product-pinnacle.html

There is a column missing from that chart to show the weight comparison between ffg BP and fffg BP.

The literature for pinnacle says its a straight swap for BP so I guess you are right to say 20.4gr to 16gr pyro going by the chart if we accept fffg BP and fffg pinnacle are the same wt/vol.

    Not confused at all, honest

Anyway, using the 16gn of pyrodex last night made a nice big bang, plenty of sparks out of the front and I even managed to hit one of the targets at 20yrds.

Good start to my BP career I hope

Theres a bit on substitutes here

    http://www.curtrich.com/bpsubsdummies.html

Notice you dont need lube with 777

Its not really that critical what your start load is, you will be going up and down to find what you like. I use 12gr when I am trying to score on the target and 30gr when there are newbies on the firing line, lots of bang and smoke to keep them on their toes.

I thought I was saving paper and being very generous leaving the other one for someone else to use it
