177 flies flatter meaning less holdover under
but if you use a .22 and learn ranges etc then its just as effective also noticed less runners with the .22 than the smaller .177 because the smaller pellets went right through at closer ranges

All calibres are equal.
Even the big .25 is equal to .177 whe all things are considered (range and hitting power).
Some calibres have longer range (.177 / .20), while some have more hitting power (.22 / .25).
The shorter range of the bigger calibres is compensated by their greater stopping power (less runners and less acrobatics).
8 grains at 750ft/sec or 20 grains at 500ft/sec - which one would you rather be hit by?
But a .25 is useless beyond 30yds as the slow and heavy pellet falls to earth.
The trick is to choose the calibre that reaches far enough to use against your preferred quarry, but packs the biggest punch.
.20 has the best balance of range and stopping power, while .177 and .22 tip the scales in one direction or the other.
I have used all calibres successfully, but would not recommend .177 for spring guns because it's too "jumpy" when fired - unless the gun is one of the best (Prosport, TX, HW97, Evo).

I had a .22 & it deffo stopped the bunnies harder, i had less twitchers (not runner, twitchers), however i now use .177 & it does the same job, just at more range (40/45 instead of 30/35), they just tend to twitch for longer, they are dead as i have gone & necked a few but they still twitched on, so all i can think is the .22 knocks them out at the same time.
I won't look back from .177 now unless i go FAC or end up ratting, which is doubtful as i hate them.

Hating rats is a good reason for shooting them.

Luckily the ones near me arnt quite that big.
No all .177's are useless for hunting.
You need a proper .22 for that
