The IZH 46 is a very good competitive SSP pistol at a reasonable price.

Due to demand they are not that easy to find however.

Certainly a notch above the Gamo, with a far better trigger and ergonomics

There is a Walther LPM-1 for sale on the stirton site for £300 (NTDWM by the way).

IMO air is the way to go in the interest of ease of use, cost and consistency.

Top dollar favourites appear to be the Morini 162E and Steyr LP10 for precision events, and the semi auto Steyr LP50 for timed and rapid.

If you don't want to spend the fat end of a grand there's always the older s/h varients (LP1 and LP5 in the case of Steyr) FWB P34s seem to come up occasionally at £300-400..
