Just a thought, but a really good, gunk free way of polishing is to use micromesh if you can get it.

Rubber cushioned and leaves no mess, and unlike a dremel, it wont polish edges you dont want it to (although I love my dremel....it's an electrical swiss army knife).

The tool/s you need is a ROLL PIN PUNCH SET. Buy the best you can, but not the long ones.
