    Vcr Act

Hi all while browsing in a local gun shop a young man
came in with a half stripped gun he told the shop keeper
he had been replacing the trigger unit with the gun
cocked and had accidently fired it with the result it had
removed the top section of his third finger, He asked
if the gunsmith would reasemble the gun as he was in some pain and the shop keeper said that if the gun was
over 12ft bl he would have to confinscate it,if this is
correct how do you know if you have no crono? and what
    happens to the confiscated guns?

If you don't have an FAC and the gun is over, it gets scrapped and you probably face a fine and disqualification from any gun ownership (sub 12ft.lb or not) under section 21 of the Fire Arms Act for a specified period (anything from three mnths to life) or worse . Best to re-post this in the general section however, as this is the collectors section. Atb and hope your finger gets better soon : Gareth W-B.

I was under the impression that the rifle would stay with the RFD until the power had been reduced.

Ahh, that's better, now in the general section where those most likely to know will see it . Hi Rich, they can't, not once the Police are involved, although some gunsmiths may undertake the work to reduce a rifle to a legal limit for an up-front fee without breaking gun law if it arrives stripped (although shades of grey do come in to play here) without informing the Police. But if it is ott, won't return it unless signed on to a ticket . Atb: Gareth W-B.

The scenario being that you walk into a gun shop and ask them to chrono your gun. The gun happens to be say 13 FPE.

My understanding is that the RFD cannot return your gun as he is giving you an over power gun, which is illegal. The gun has never been "on ticket" so is not officially an "FAC" gun.

The RFD should be able to reduce the power (at your cost) and return your gun. It is after all your property.

I see no reason why the gun should be confiscated on a permanent basis. In this day and age with anti-tamper, guns can, and do go over power.
A typical example may be the HW100 which can climb over. These guns are sent to Hull Cartridge for adjustment (they don't confiscate them).
