The sport is a great rifle, my absolute favourite in fact, but in my experience of competing with and customising the 124 in the 80s, its breach is far from perfect.
The breach lug does wear away.
The pivot pin is hardened but the breach block isn't. This means that the breach block pivot wears into an elliptical hole and accuracy suffers. The only cure for this is to re-machine and sleeve the hole.
The breach bolt is inserted from the wrong side so that every time you cock the rifle it tries to unscrew the pivot bolt. It's worth re-tightening every few outings. We used to fit a 3mm locking grub screw to negate this problem.
Having said that these problems only arise if the rifle is used alot. The 124 was unbeatable in its day and returning to airguns after 20 years I expected to find something better. I haven't yet.
