Air charged CO2 capsule....

Anyone know what happened to these re-usable co2 capsules that were charged by pump (either stirrup or slim jim) don't know which...
Did they not work or were they banned - cos' they seemed like a good idea at the time......

Someone posted a few months ago asking about refilling them with air.

While CO2 has a lower pressure (about 56 Bar) and you can fill Air upto 300 Bar if you have a cylinder.

There are a couple of problems one is your valve and internals are designed to run at CO2 pressure.
So you would have to fill it to the same pressure as CO2.

This is completely pointless, because the CO2 is a liquid whereas the air is a gas.

For instance if you were to boil 18g of water (1 mole of water is 18g), then the gaseos water would occupy a volume 22.4 litres.

The density of water is 1 gram per ml.

So this means a gas occupies 1244 times more volume.

So if you are getting 50 shots from a CO2 capsule with liquid CO2 then you will be lucky if you get 1 shot with air at the same pressure.

So it is scientifically impossible to get this to work.

Then just buy a cheap large CO2 fire extinguisher from that internet auction site.
Then when eventually you run out of CO2, just get it refilled.

Obviously CO2 extinguishers are refillable.

I worked out the difference in price per shot a while ago when I was considering converting to bulk fill..

I buy 500 packs of CO2 from a very cheap source.

Even with very low CO2 Capsule price I worked out it was 14 times cheaper per shot with bulk fill.

If you don't know, bulk fill means filling the main tube with liquid CO2.

Thanks for the reply - but this statement seems at odds with the same system used by the Brocock air cartridge and that had a much smaller air volume than a 12g co2 cartridge and I would of thought therefore had a much greater capacity than 1 shot....or am I being thick?

The one which was banned from sale (Still legal to own).

You only have one shot per charge.
So this is why you about 50 or so of the small brass air chargers.

You charge each one of those upto about 200 to 300 BARS.

They are not CO2 guns so the design is completely different.

Each one of the small brass beasts is infact a valve.
They hold a charge and there is a small hole in the back which is opened by a spring pushing a fine rod into the hole in the valve.

The reason why they are powerfull is because they are inline.
This means there are no 90 degree angles for the gas to pass through like nearly all CO2 / PCP guns.

So the gas flow is less turbulent.

I believe that Brocock still market a replacement 12g size capsule that you fill with air & use them instead of the 12g C02 capsules.

By all accounts they are not that good.

i had a few back in the late 90s when they first came out PRETTY USELESS 3 or 4 shots per charge! if you were lucky! not worth the metal they were made out of, thats why you dont see them any more, there was also a couple of italians making air bottles for co2 guns that seemed to work quite well, but they went bust app or so im told, hope this helps!!!

I had a customer in the shop a few weeks ago who had an 88gm Crosman 'airsource' bottle (i hate that name... it's CO2 not air! The clue's in the fact that it's filled with CO2!) and he had converted it (or had had it converted) with some sort of q/f male fitting to convert it to hold air.

I haven't seen him since, i wonder if he's still alive....?
