We're going to need hands-on folk, Mike, yes.
Once the roof work has been done and the other materials are due for delivery, we'll need folk to offer their hands and feet to do all the less specialised work.

By this I mean work such as stud wall moving/building and plumbing type work.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

We have been let down !

I have been trying to contact the manager of the company that offered to donate the materials for the re-building of the end wall since 10/09/07. Today i have emailed phoned 3 times left messages on their mobile and even had one of my old colleagues ask them to ring me to arrange delivery of the materials.

All forms of contact have been met with no response and I truly believe that I am being ignored and rather than tell me straight that they do not wish to donate these materials they have chosen to be cowardly.

It was very disappointing for me to email Rosie today and let her know that the proposed delivery for Saturday is at this time cancelled.

Sorry guys it would appear that the donation of the materials has been withdrawn this I am assuming because the person (read spineless coward)that offered these items is not taking my calls or answering my emails, I know he knows I have been trying to contact him

Any suggestions regarding getting further donations of materials will be welcomed with open arms

I have been contacted by the roofers who are now going to contact WheelPower the landlords regarding access and starting to get the roof watertight.

I think I may have to do a sponsored shootathon to raise the cash towards the endwall

I am toying with the idea of writing to his managing director and just thanking him for nothing, especially as the company involved make a big thing out of all their charitable donations..

Anyway on a brighter note the roofers are starting work next week and should be finished within a week so at least it will stop raining inside.

I am going away for 2 weeks from the 11th so hopefully we will then be able to start looking at work parties !!!

    cheers all

I could drop by next week to take pictures of the work so that all those too far away for regular visits, can see what's what.

If anyone's going down from south wales then let me know!!!!! It would good if whoever's arranging the work could post up the work parties and when the work is being done. If it's after Christmas then I'll hopefully be driving myself by then.

OK, I've just got back from having a quick visit to the halls, and, like I promised, have taken just a few pictures of the work which has been done there.

Now, don't rush for the party poppers just yet, as there has only been some scaffolding put up. This is for when the roofing company come in and cover the existing asbestos roof with a special covering.

Like I said, here are the pictures:

At least from these pictures you can see what kind of buildings they are. Compared to the swish, shiny aluminium-covered stadium which is no more than 80 yards away, they're a couple of pig sheds.

I am moving to Bedfordshire on Thursday. I would like to volunteer my services helping with any loading, unloading, fetching, carrying sweeping up or anything else that I can do to assist this worthy project.

    Report from Stoke Mandeville.

Things are really starting to happen at the ranges!

I arranged with Rosie Hughes, the group coordinator, to meet her and her husband Keith at the ranges today, because the company who are doing the roof re-covering work, started today.

I met up with Keith and Rosie, who'd got their slightly before me, at about 11:15 this morning. The lads from the spraying company had been there long enough to set their gear up and have a cuppa whilst 'scoping the joint.

They gave me quite a concise run down of the process involved and it sounds very impressive! Basically it's a resin-based foam application which offers good insulative and waterproofing properties; just what they need down at Stoke Mandeville!!

It's applied via a compressed air line, through a spray gun attached to a very bulky hose. The actual foam seems to be made from a two-pack mixture of a resin and and another, ammonia-like smelling chemical. It doesn't smell too fragrant, but hey...what does that matter!

It's dried in about 10 seconds, so there's no problem with runs or poor coverage, as they can simply blast a load more gear onto the area affected.
They have to prepare the surface, of course, so all the lichen and moss has to be removed from the asbestos sheeting, otherwise the foam won't adhere to the surface and it could cause a blow hole where the moisture stops the foam curing. One of the lads was clearing the vegetation from the roof as his mate was laying it on. Sorted!

They were rained-off yesterday, for the reasons above, so they were anxious to start work because of scheduling issues with head office. Then they couldn't access some parts of the roof because of frosty patches which hadn't yet been melted by the morning sun. This wouldn't have been a problem by midday, so they didn't have long to wait.

The next part of the process involves painting the hardened foam basecoat with an aluminium rubber-based paint, to further seal the building from the elements. I can't remember what this stuff is called, but it comes in 25ltr drums and there's lots of it!! The painting will be done by another bunch of lads from the same company in the next few days. Hopefully I will get along for more stories and pictures then.

They were quite surprised, as I was, that there are few parts of the roof which are strong enough to support the weight of a person, but even so, they must tread carefully. That roof is 50+ years old!
Rosie told me that she always has reservations about workmen being less-than-honest, but her fears soon dissolved when the older of the two blokes pointed out, just by looking at the roof, where the leaks were coming from; that put her mind at rest.

She's now anxious to get a work-party together to dig a trench at the rear of the building so stop the rain water draining into the building's hall from underneath the wall. All we'll need are fit blokes with time, energy and a willingness to put some work for a worthy cause - but that's yet to be arranged.

Rosie also told me that she can't see the images posted on this thread, because she's not a member, but I've told her that I'll create an account for her so that she can view the images, and even post/reply if she has the time.

Anyway, enough gumf from me, here are the pictures and a short video.

    Nice one, Pete.

I'll get over there as soon as I can for a looksee, but it'll be great if that place can be made watertight and better insulated. I'm sorting more funding at the moment, but we're certainly moving in the right direction.

    Onward!
