Results of the 2nd long range attempt.

It seemed like an ideal day to attempt another crack at long range. Got to the club at 10am, and there was a very slight breeze from left to right, but nothing to worry about.

Set out the cards on the 100yd range at Dowry Hill, then proceeded to get all the kit ready.

After filling both guns to 190bar, I got the table ready which I was using to bencrest from.

I started with the EV2/Leupold Competition 40mag combo. I knew from previous experience that 100yds is around 3 full turns up from my 35yd Zero, which is where I started, it was shooting a little high so I re-dialled and knocked 12 clicks off. After a few attempts, just to get the feel of the conditions really, I began to try and get some good groups. The wind was worse than I thought, I would get 2-3 pellets inside 40mm then 1 would go low, or way left or right. I started to choose the right time to release the trigger, looking at the trees and feeling the wind on my face. After several more attempts, the best 5 shot group was 58mm C T C. I decided to give it a rest and went inside to do some 25yd Benchresting.

1 hour later I was ready for another go. This time with the Zenith/Leupold Competition 40mag combo. I got a few groups between 50 and 60mm with the JSB 4.51s. I decided to try the mosquitoes in the Zenith.....WOW!! what a surprise, on my 3rd attempt I got a 49mm C T C group of 5 shots...not bad.

Now for the EV2 again, same set up as earlier. A few attempts saw groups of 45-50mm, which I was really happy with. I noticed that the wind had died down a little and the trees were not moving as much as before. I went for it again, this time shooting the disc which was very low to the ground. First try saw an improvment of 1mm, getting a 48mm C T C 5 shot group, beating the previous attempt with the Zenith by 1mm.

The bit was now firmly between my teeth and I went for another go. Again shooting low to the ground. First 3 shots were very close together, I knew this could be a good group, trying my best to stay composed and not snatch the trigger I let the next shot off.. phew...it joined the others. Pressure was no on to get the final shot of the group close enough. I released the final shot and it landed a bit left and bit lower from the lowest shot of the group.....still not too bad. I went up to measure and take pictures, and to my surprise the 5 shot group measured only 32mm C T C.....I was over the moon.

One of the lads who shoot Small-Bore came over to have a chat and asked what I was doing, he was very surprised when I told him I was attenpting to group 5 shots within 40mm at 100yds.

The thing I have learned from this is..... there was no way I could get consecutive groups of less than 45mm. My average grouping on the day (4 hours of trying) was around 60mm. The day was by no means perfect, and I will try again on a very still day.

    Regards. Neil.
