Dirty Harry used a S&W 29 with a 6" barrel, the undershroud was only three inches, not quite as long as this version. Also pretty sure it was not an airgun but i can look into that.
In real terms what difference does the barrel make. Is 8" not too long? Does the small amount of gas discharged on each shot really expand all the way down the barrel? Any increase in accuracy?

    What difference etc

    In order
The longer barrel allows the pellet to stabilise in its rotation better because it has more of the twist of the rifling over the greater length.
Yes the tiny puff of co2 gets all the way to the end of the barrel or else your pellet becomes what is technically known as a "plug".
A stable pellet is an accurate pellet. Accurate referes to the gun, NOT the shooter.

    Note the piece of trivia:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066999/trivia

I think it was only after the film that everyone wanted a 44" and S&W had to increase production.
