How powerful is your HW45?

Just bought a combro chrono and was pleasantly suprised to find my 15 year old .177 HW45 running at 5.5 FPE (eley wasps), thats with original spring and seals!

Heavy pellets in a pistol are a waste of time, they are pushed out at a much lower velocity compared to medium or light pellets that the ME suffers.

Done a bit of testing with my very early HW45....

Milbro Match 7.7gr........av. 5.08 ft/lb
RWS Super H point 7.28gr......av. 4.94 ft/lb
RWS Hobby 7.1gr........av. 4.92 ft/lb
Eley Wasp 7.35gr......av. 4.73 ft/lb
Bisley Magnum 10.46gr.....av. 4.08 ft/lb
RWS Supermag 9.3gr......av. 3.89 ft/lb
H&N Rabbit Magnum 16.8gr.....av. 1.73 ft/lb

The RWS Supermag's are a surprise - I expected them to do well
The Milbro Match were amazingly consistant with only 4 fps variation over 5 shots!
This particular gun shoots tights groups and most smoothly with RWS Hobby although I will try the Milbro pellets at some point now.....

When new, my .22 HW45 was getting 6.0FPE or very close to it. At that time I had lots of Beeman FTS pellets which the H&N manufacturer calls Field & Target Trophy. I had a heavy lot that weighed 14.9gr and hit 425fps.

My .22 HW45 is now on it's second spring. I changed the original at approx 7500-8000 pellets but I could have got more out of it. The spring change was part of my review. Anyway, the new spring has seen around 6000 shots and is now doing 415fps with 14.2gr RWS SHP (5.4FPE).

Did a little more testing on my .177 yesterday, just curious.

RWS C02 3.2fpe

RWS Superdome 4.0fpe

Defiant 4.1fpe

AA Field 4.3fpe
Stopped there a ricochet T*####*ED my trigger finger (From a catalouge backstop)
Result not much change from last time I checked it although i cant explain the initial drop from over 5.0fpe.

Here are a few possible problems to check for when velocity drops in the HW45.

1 - Breech seal. Nicks or missing chunks will effect velocity. Sometimes a thin shim under the seal will help a sloppy or worn example.

2 - Broken mainspring. The HW45 often sees close to 10,000 shots before the spring is broken. I'm not sure if you shot this much in 2 years. Velocity will sometimes drop a bit when you pass the halfway mark but you had a large drop. Possibly the spring was not a good example.

3 - Dry pistol. I find I get best velocity when there is a very slight dieseling. After the shot I can see a very faint, palm sized, whitish cloud at the muzzle. There is no loud bang from the fuel burn and velocity is consistent.

It has seen much use, it is quite dry the seal seems Ok not checked the mainspring. I think it would definately benefit from a good tune.
