    BSA Mercury S

    Hello,

Mercury S – I remember reading an article on these a while back, but cannot find said article or remember the full details. Comes with age …………….
Is there a MK1 and a MK2 Mercury S, the difference being the colour of the wood?
I have two, both 0.177, but one has a very dark reddish stock, the other a lighter wood stock.
Both are boxed, very near mint and haven’t been used in the 5/6 years I’ve had them.
Anyone care to value them for me please ?

    Many Thanks,

    Sam

I'm on a bit of a crusade at the moment on mint 80's rifle prices. Mint boxed, best of class rifles, should hit the £200 mark. £250 is not out of order but would include post. However, every mark takes a few pounds off. An excellent example £160 and a used but not abused £120. Anything rough then a lot less. Box and paperwork adds £25.

Not seen many Mercury S' offered and they are in demand.

Common relatively inexpensive rifles were made in quantity but were all used. The problem is finding unused ones. That is my reasoning why the price is range is so big; the reason for such a high premium. Finally, the specialist rifles take time to sell; a month to find a buyer is not unusual; or just a couple of minutes!

Sold a vgc .22 Turkish tan walnut Mercury-S .22 in 2005 for £125 plus post, a vgc dark reddish brown American walnut Mercury-S .177 in 2006 for £185 collected, and a mint (and I do mean mint) boxed blonde English walnut example complete with everything it came with when new (targets, target holder, oil, pell-pack, booklet and inspection card) for £250 plus post in 2007.

Missed the .22 example the most however, as feel I sold it too soon as although .22 examples are not as rare as those in .177, imo they are ten times nicer to shoot . This in mind have just secured another Mercury-S in .22 for myself to play with in the hope that it will finally put my Mercury-S spectre to bed (as I said, feel I sold my last .22 too soon).

Once said Mercury-S .22 has done this though, it may well be moved on again so as to help keep the number of collectables I hold under the two dozen mark and help avoid the number held once more creeping up to 68 (the most I have owned at any one time ): Gareth.

May have a tan coloured .22 to move on in a couple of months, and have amended my post above accordingly. If interested, let me know so that when/if I price and advertise it I can keep you in the loop . Atb: Gareth W-B.
