    old webley

I'm thinking of buying an old webley to do up maybe an eclipse or vulcan.

Out of all the old webleys can anybody recommend one? Also does anybody know if the eclipse has a retaining catch for the underlever?

    Cheers

If you look for an Eclipse remember the cylinder is alloy so scope dovetails are more likely to be chewed and refinishing is not as straightforward as getting it reblued.

Personally I'd ask "Why go for rough one?" There are plenty of good ones about, and by the time you have finished it will have cost more than buying one in decent nick.

    WEBLEY MK III UNDERLEVER

Rough or heavily used Mark III's come up occasionally on the BBS for sale and I think this would be a better investment of your time than a Vulcan, or even an Eclipse (if you can find one!).

They are all-steel and some of them have very nice wood, so the time you spend refinishing will be well worth the effort. The powerplant is straightforward and you can apply the usual tweaks to get a smooth shooter putting out between 11 and 12 ft/lbs in .22.

It's a classic air-rifle which will outlast the lot of us.

B.A.R. has one in its second-hand department, a bit pricey at £150 but they are a shop so they have to make money .. the ones on the BBS seem to be £100 or less.

That's what a Mk III looks like anyway. Why not stick an ad in the Wanted section? Someone will have one sitting in the back of their gun cupboard.
