see how the makers sold them as safe fun for the teaching of responsible gun handling etc. ...try this today in kids magazines (these adverts mostly came from boys own paper etc....the target reader age then was 8-16 years old).......and you can see the headlines already "SHOCK HORROR...THEY WANT OUR KIDS TO BE KILLERS" cut to distressed mums and focus groups, stern firearms "specialists" gingerly holding up gat pistols etc, etc,.......signing off now as getting grumpy again!.....(note to self)...a dinnertime of airsporter therapy needed tomorrow I think will get me back to normal.
Less than a fiver.........hard to imagine!!!!!!

1930's German advert for EM-GE KRONE and Multishot KRONE(M).

Advert is from their 1938 catalogue

old BSA catalogue - Health and safety

The Book of the BSA Air Rifle c1911
This excellent and interesting old catalogue has an amusing warning/hint for beginners

    It reads:

The pellet should not be placed in the mouth. It would gather moisture which would be left to form rust in the barrel

I also noticed that there is a photograph in the book of a typical club range that shows an air rifle shooter, shooting at a bell target at 6 yards
In front of the shooter sat at a table is the scorer and standing right next to the target is a youth who dabs the white paint on the target between shots.
How times have changed. Shooting now must be one of the safest pastimes/sports yet we still get a bad press
    hold me back !!

There is another good'un in there, a quote from the medical officer of the london county council in march 1907....

"The tendency of girls to nurse dolls, or of boys to play soldiers is absolutely normal. The failure to exhibit these normal tastes may be held to indicate mental defect!"

He then goes on to say about air rifle training / clubs at school.....

"the danger of putting a rifle into a small boy's hands must not be overlooked. With proper care the danger can be almost entirely eliminated, and it is worth while running the infinitesimal risk that remains, to teach the boys to handle a gun with proper respect and care"

Try and imagine a public figure today promoting shooting for 10 year olds!!

Well.thats a 100 years of progress for you!

    Boys and guns

That quote from the London Council medical Officer, 1907, is one of my favourites from the BSA advertising of the time. I believe that very recently some child psychologist has accepted that it is good for girls to play with dolls and boys to play with (toy) guns. Trouble these days is that some of the older boys have semi-automatics!

    Great material.
