Angry Bsa "h" the lincoln....suprise inside!!!!!

Dear all, started on my newly acquired toy this evening, just a strip, check, clean and replace anything missing (or so I thought as it all seemed fine and smooth to shoot)...anyway, I ended fishing out THIS! .. http://www.flickr.com/photos/31228487@N07/2966954223/

Any ideas where it came from, and what should be inside please....it WAS a nicely made, heavy piston, still is 270g in weight even with more holes than metal left, or am I totally unaware of the BSA tuning shop where they spent hour after hour in 1908 firing the guns, taking them apart, and tuning the piston weight/spring rate to optimise performance......gun number is 5756....if the artisan is out there, would love to chat some!

    Lincoln Tuning

I've just asked my Grandad about this and he was totally shocked.

He reckons it should have had a PTFE piston head fitted as well.

    All the best Mick

    Talking Lincoln

    Well,
I have heard of the Texas hain saw massacre, but this had to be that other horror film,

    DRILLER KILLER

The perp should be taken out, and his drill removed from his chuck!!!
The armourer, with no where near as many guns as I used to have.

Loving these replies!....getting the old girl ready to rock and roll for tomorrow (after an extended deburring session as the drill wielding muppet had left flaps of metal inside the holes in the piston, gawd knows how lucky I am that the cylinder is not scored)...anyway will use genuine eley wasps, anybody want to take a punt on the fps ?........FREE pack of targets (shoot.n.c and pistol 6 yards mixture)..post free to anyone guessing within 25 fps!.....will refit spring shown in photo for this.

Also ready for massive helpings of pie (humble variety) if it all goes well, and will be down focus asap for a new pack of 6mm twist drills to sort out all my other guns.....

the gun, you may keep the piston.
I was just playing around, but when you do consider selling, I'll be interested in buying it, as long as the price is right off course.

I will take a guess on the muzzle velocity, 575fps.

    Have fun, and shoot safe!

    All is not lost

    Hi edbear

Just a few thoughts on your piston as it would appear to be easy enough to fix the situation, if you can't find a replacement.

The easiest fix would be to install a piston sleeve and top hat to bring the weight of the piston back up to standard spec.

The second option would be to weld all the drill holes up and machine it back to standard size.

Third option would be to machine off the outside of the piston leaving the sear rod and piston seal face, then machine up a piece of tube to form the outer body of the piston complete with cocking slot. Weld these two together and then machine them down to the original size.

You may actually find that the piston you have works well enough as it is.
Years ago in Airgun world I read a letter sent in by Mike Wade ( Mike Wade engineering ) telling how he had been experimenting with an Airsporter and had managed to up the power a fair bit by lightening the piston by drilling holes in it.

I can't wait for your crono results

    All the best Mick

    Talking Well oh well !!!!!!!

All back together, had to refinish the metalwork as was bare metal, and rusting instantly without oiling when I got it.....left the woodwork, shine in pic is just oil!....still needs sights to finish.

Dieseling with a piston like that makes "holy smoke" sorry about that. Whoops with the first string, hmmm 16 ft/lb no wonder your arm went numb.

    ATB Chris.
