    Sounds like a worthwhile investment.

I wouldn't want to be mucking around trying to pull out a lead ball, that's in a tube, pointed at me, and backed by enough explosive to blow it through my carcass!

Nipple out and push with a rod from the back for me.

    Tell me I'm wrong.

Maybe for a single shot that does not have that possibility?

Nipple out. Trickle a little powder down the flash hole using a needle if neaded. Put the nipple back, primer on and bang. Works for me every time.
The gadget looks intresting though so let us know how you get on if you get one. Tim

A friend of mine, new to BP loaded up one day with no powder. As we were all rolling about laughing our nuts off, he calmly pulled out one of these and calmly explained what it was. That stopped the laughing and we all gathered round waiting to see how fast the ball came out of the barrel. We waited, waited, waited.... nothing and now it was out of compressed gas.
His face was a bit comical as we were coming out with stories about how we'd have to cut his barrel in half, get a big drill and all other ridiculous suggestions. Eventually we told him to remove his nipple, pour powder in and fire off, which worked.

They may well work in other situations, but not this one.

Which is what I suspected. Thanks mate. My observation is that the ball is pretty well reamed in tight and I just couldn't see a bit of gas (unless under very high pressure) blowing it out.

I spoke to someone today who has one of these unloaders, said it was a waste of money.
The co2 cartridges are not standard, and could not be obtained locally. It required a new cartridge, for every attempt as theres only enough gas to unload one ball.
    Even then, it didnt work.

I have got one of these and would not be without it, the early ones came with a small gas cartridge the new models come with a larger cartridge, can’t remember the sizes though. I bought it for my musket but first used it when I had some trouble with the percussion caps supplied with the clubs pistol and felt it best to unload a couple of chambers using the flintlock pan adapter so the nozzle went into the nipple of the chamber a quick puff and it blew the shot and charge out with ease.

I have used it on my musket if I am not happy with the seating of the ball (I use a marked dowel as a rammer) it ejects the ball like a bl••dy great air gun sending it about 15 feet. I do keep a spare cylinder as it does use a fair bit of gas.

I have wondered if as we have a compressor and gas cylinder if one couldn’t make up an adapter to recharge the CO2 cartridges with compressed air to save buying new ones though.

    saf-T-unloader

I borrowed a friends unloader after putting a patched ball down al 42" of my brown bess barrel - you could not trickle enough powder behind it to blow it out... but the unloader blew it 25 feet... next I left a cleaning rag down there... that was NO bother... though powder would have done it... I like the idea for clearing nipples and breeches once they get clogged....Another guy made an adaptor and used his compressor for a blockage, but thats no use at the firing-point my friend got his from Dixie.. but I can't find a UK supplier
Anybody know of one ?? I tried to order from the first site on a search, but had no reply. Mark

A friend of mine shoots only blackpowder. He has one and it works everytime. There are different adaptors for percussion and flint so make sure you get the right adaptor if you buy one.

If you do use one make sure the gun is pointed down range. The projectiles leave the barrel with enough force to injure or even kill.
