    RWS CO2 TARGET PELLETS

Anyone who follows Jim McArthurs Police Pistol thread will know there is some problem with Umarex guns producing clean cut target holes. I recently tried some RWS CO2 Target pellets. Like the RWS R10 that I normally use in my match pistol They are 7.0gr in weight but they have a slightly different shape to the skirt and the head. The tin shows a picture of the Umarex made Sig Sauer so there is no doubt what they are intended for. I tried them in my Christmas present Beretta 92FS which I had just fitted a Red Dot to.
I am pleased to report that at 10 metres shooting two handed I was able to keep eight shots inside the seven ring of a standard 10 metre pistol target and most inside the eight ring. They left quite clean holes. Of course I would expect to do better with my Steyr but then it cost six times as much as an Umarex and has a trigger pull of around a pound whereas the Beretta breaks at about 4 pounds in single action mode. Altogether quite pleasing and I think this is part of the solution to clean holes rather than the total answer. I got the pellets from JS Ramsbottom and they were a quid cheaper than R10.

There is no problem with the Umarex guns cutting holes

The problems are more to do with the standard A4 paper we use to print the targets on.

I find that any flat head (or as they are commonly known "Wad Cutters") will put a sharp, clean cut hole in a thicker medium, but in bog standard copier/printer paper the holes can tear. If I back my paper onto card (cerial boxes for example) the flat head pellets again produce clean sharp holes.

Round headed or pointed pellets produce different results. Pointed tear a hole in card thats barely visible, round heads tend to put a clean cut in part of the hole, but tear a strip at the other side of the hole.

For paper target shooting Wad Cutters/Flat head are preferable

I only offer my findings for what they are worth. Prior to using this pellet I couldn't get my Umarexs to cut clean holes. This was discussed at some length in the aforementioned thread.

I use flat-head wadcutters in both my Umarex and Beeman - both are listed around 425 fps MV - and tend to get shredded holes.

Might have something to do with the fact that it's hard to get everything flat and flush and tight with the jerry-rigged target contrivances I use: generally, the paper target is thumb-tacked to a piece of cardboard, loosely attached to a soft-foam archery target.

Or it could be the pellet shape.

    Or the low velocity.

Or a combination of the above.

    Or something entirely different!

In any case...the proof of the pudding, as they say. If it works for you, then it works!

    Talking Paper punching

We've all got our own way to produce clean holes for scoring,I use large sticky labels behind each target to stop tearing, and yes they are VERY large with all my Fliers.(old floppy disc labels)..mike

In my HW40, RWS C02 Targets cut perfect holes in my bisley targets but tear the A4 paper i use for printing targets.
So i tried the daystate selects 4.51 i normaly use in my HW97, and they cut perfect pellet sized holes in the A4 paper (in the bisley targets the make smaller holes) with no tearing.

    Same in my Hw45.

Chip are the Daystate pellets you mention flat headed or round headed?

    They are round heads.

I have found accupels work really well in my umarex beretta, these are also round heads but are very short and a real nice fit in the mag.
I bought a tin for my rifles but they did not like them, so i use them in my umarex no problem at all.

    RWS CO2 TARGET PELLETS

I bought some of these recently for my CP88, and when I compared them to RWS Hobby under a magnifying glass they seem to be identical. They are also both 7 gns, so it might be worth trying these as they are £1-40p cheaper for 500 from JSR.

My RWS hobby have a knurled waist whereas the Co2 target don't. Probably no difference otherwise so good advice. Anyone else got any ideas on the best pellets?

On the other hand the RWS Geco are identical to the CO2 Target and are much cheaper. Still not cutting brilliant holes though.

I'd second this as part of the problem!

At our club we have photocopied practice targets on two slightly different types of card - one always produces clean holes, the other always tears.

I thought this, has anyone found a printer paper that fares better than the rest, or found any paper that works in there printer that does not tear as much.

Apparently specialised target paper is made of very short fibres so it does cut clean holes. It's probably mostly recycled anyway. Writing paper has longer fibres. A good source of something similar to target paper that Umarexs will cut would be much appreciated.

I've found that if you're not using a backing for the paper (card etc) that a strip of gaffa/duck tape on the back of the target area helps a lot as well - the holes come out much crisper as the tape stops the paper from tearing....others types of tape that I have tried haven't done as well and I think that parcel tape actually made it worse.

I have also read that the fibres in proper targets are very small and that the card doesn't have a grain as such, unlike A4 which has much longer fibres that cause the tears.

My current solution on my pellet trap is to have a card backing - when this gets filled with too many holes, I cover it over with a layer of tape & its good for another few sets of targets - this way you use less tape than by sticking it directly onto the back of each target...not that it costs a lot anyway
