Correct ball mould size for .36 cal?

As above - anyone enlighten me please?

I know it's usually .451 for .44 cal, but what do you order for a .36?

    Thanks!

Yes but apart from that, Mrs Lincoln, what did you think of the performance?

    My recommendation in a 36 cal revolver is a 375 or 380 - but then again I put 457 in a 44 - not 451 ......

    Cheers

    balls

P.S. also use a .454 in my R&S, tried .451 but too loose did not leave the ring of lead, again these seem just right, Tezz

Surely the best idea would be to measure the bore? the maximum diameter of the bore should be the same size as the ball. Unless you are patching the ball, when it should be the same as the diameter across the lands of the rifling.

I have a .44, and .451 ball fits well, though the reccomended size was .457, which was way too tight.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Yes, I know the issue you mean with the R&S preferring something bigger. The 1858 Remington is OK with the .451s though.

    Hi Mousemann

    My 1858 Pietta Remington 44 Stainless - likes 457 ..

I was using smaller balls (451) - as it was a struggle to get them in - so I did not dare try bigger - then it turned out that the lead I was casting from was not soft lead - but had a little antimony in.

Changed to soft lead - 457 goes in beautifully with a nice lead ring cut - which means more flat on the rifling = better groups !!!

My grouping improved as soon as I moved to 457

Wish you were closer - you could try mine gladly !

Oh - just realised = 1000 posts !! where did they all come from !!

    Cheers

Thanks for that, Roy and congratulations on your 1,000th post!

The lead I've got is all pure, but I will closely look at the fit next time I fire some. It's handy to know about the .457 being best for that model.
