"Floating Barrel"?

I have read several threads which reference a "Floating Barrel" being relatively new to air gunning I have a couple of questions

So what is it?

Why is it preferred?

How do you do it?

Floating barrel means the barrel does not touch any part of the stock "floats in air", this mean it is able to flex and move freely when the shot is taken. This means that it should do the same thing every time and thus be more accurate. At least thats the way this thick sparky understands it

That makes perfect sence to me too.....the barrel "Floats"

Now for the really dumb question....

How do they do that then?......(no smarty pants answers....)

Well, the barrel attaches to the action, the action attaches to the stock and the stock doesn't touch the barrel (sounds like the skeleton song don't it)

a floating barrel is 1 that is unsupported and is less likely to be pulled offline by various factors like wood shrinkage pulling on barrel bands as per the hw100.

I tried to do a drawing but it looks naff, with most rifles you should be able to slide a piece of paper etc between the stock and barrel it's doesnt to to be loads of space just enough to allow movement,

And then you get a group of folk who insist a barrel must be bedded too....

does seem to be American 'sporting rifle' shooters convinced by this. Personally I've just bedded the action.
