    Remington express compact

Does any body have one of these?

I'm looking for a cheapie compact barn gun,

I have been looking for an old bsa lightning but can't find one,

The Remington compact seems to be a good option but it seems difficult to find out the power out of these.

Very capable of full power, some run hot so need to be checked!

I've got the standard version and that was running somewhat over !"ft.lbs until it got dealt with!

I have actually had a full length version and it seemed well made but length of pull was too much for me, sold it to a friend of mine.

From what I can tell is that the compact isn't the same cylinder or piston though?

TBH not sure about the action internals, but doubt they are different.

As an aside I found the LOP on the standard too much. I replaced the butt pad with a thinner one and it has transformed it for me. Just look around on the bay and you'll find something that will work after a bit of sawing, grinding and swearing!

The Compact version does around 10 ft/lb (in .22) out of the box.
So if you are looking for something a bit smaller & with less power than the full fat Express, then the Compact will provide a solid but relatively cheap solution.
If you cant find one, you haven't been trying very hard.

The full size Express is known to be a bit hot out of the box on occasion, so approach with caution

Why so worried about the power? 8-10 ft/lb is more than enough for a true barn gun - full UK power will often over-penetrate at barn ranges, something to be avoided if you want to stay in the farmer's good books....

Not too keen on that place mate, I went to buy a rifle from there before and the box looked like it had been under water!

The piston and spring guide is the same as in the Express, the cylinder is about 20mm shorter making it a much shorter stroke , i work on a tuning kit for them as i do kits for the Express. I found that with the cost of the kit and the small increase in power it was not worth it, if you want full power buy the Express. I expect that we will have the key board tuners soon telling you that if you shorten the stroke open up the transfer port and fit a spring from a Ford Fiesta it will do 50 ft lbs.
