    Explosives Cert

    Hi chaps,
I'm thinking of buying a black powder musket for something a bit different, a bit of occasional fun shooting. I already hold a shotgun cert, but I understand I need two further certs for purchase and transportation of black powder. I'm just curious as to what is involved in gaining these? Do you have another visit & interview as I did when I applied for my SGC?
I was going to use a substitute - i.e 777, but I've just been to the shop for a bit of "fact finding" and they have advised against these.
Also looks like I'm going to have to find a way of drilling a hole up into my top box so it will fit in my cabinet!
Any advise for a total noobie to the world of BP shooting much appreciated,
    Jim

Your County Police Force will issue your licence to acquire Black Powder.
You will need to get a secure wooden box to store your powder. There are plans available to build these, or they can be purchased pre-built. Firms like Henry Kranks stock them.
You will be subject to an inspection by your FLO, in very much the same manner as when your FAC is granted/renewed. But admittedly a lot more formal.

The licence to transport Black Powder, is issued by the Health & Safety Executive. This is usually a formality after your licence to acquire has been granted.

I had to get a longer cabinet to house my 1878 Vetterli. I was lucky, I found a rusty s/h one. Cleaned it up, and bolted it to the wall alongside my existing, and put a couple of bolts between the two.

One satisfied FLO, and one happy Powder Hound.

    Hi Jim
Brattonsound www.brattonsound.co.uk do a series of cabinets for muskets and BP rifles, you order from one of their agents. Enjoy yourself it's great fun.

It's pretty straightforward. In fact, when the firearms officer came round he only wanted to see where my storage box was. Up in the loft is fine but under the stairs isn't.
    Here's the form you'll need.

Like Hares Ear said, the licence to transport BP, which you'll need before you can buy any is just a formality.
Here's a link to Peter Starley's site giving a wealth of information on BP licencing. Also a sample letter for the Health and Safety Executive to apply for your POMSTER (permission to transport the stuff).

Jim, I shoot with two Clubs. I am a lot further west than you, and the Clubs I am in are Lancashire based, and shoot at Altcar.
It isn't an ideal situation, but I am limited if I want to shoot at 200yds plus. I did visit Diggle, and the Quigley lads were great. But some of the other members need a lesson in manners.

The biggest problem facing this country today is not the terrorist. It's the politician.
