Thread: Power deviation between different pellets?

Exclamation Power deviation between different pellets?

I've recently had my HW95 (.22) professionally tuned. When the rifle was returned I was told that the power was set to 11.66 ft/lb with Ely wasp , however when I preformed my own test using H&N FTT pellets the power was much higher - between 13.5 - 14ft/lb.

Is it possible that such a power difference could occur between two different makes of pellets?

Or, could it be more likely that my chrono is playing up and giving an incorrect reading?

I'm not sure whether I should send my rifle back to be re-tuned or buy another chrono and retest.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

I'm obviously extremely worried that I may have an illegal rifle.

The trouble is that as the gun beds in it's likely to go up in power! Get it detuned as a matter of urgency before some humourless plod feels your collar

I would rapidly return the rifle to the tuner, and suggest he proves to you that it is legal, by firing a variety of pellets through HIS chrono.

Happened to me on my AA 410, the book said it was tuned using AA fields, I was using superdomes and my CB625 said it was putting out around 10.5fpe, got it tuned up to 11.5 before I tried some AA fields which took it over 12.5. Got it turned back down again pretty quick and now only use the AA fields. Next time I'll believe the guy who writes the book....

Before you do anything, did you use individually weighed pellets for your testing? Using an accurate lab scale, I've found that pellets can vary considerably from their published weights. I had a tin of H&N FTTs (22) recently where individual pellets varied from 14.0gr to 15.0gr, they're supposed to be 14.6gr.

There's been a lot of posts on here recently re the weight of FTTs. It seems that H&N alter the spec slightly from time to time and don't necessarily publish the change.

Wasps have usually been a tight fit in most of the guns I've owned, much tighter than other brands of pellet. Perhaps it's worth while switching brands as well.

I spoke to the company who tuned my 95. They advised me to put a couple hundred shots through and the power should settle down.

Does anyone know where I can buy a chrono?

    Excess Power

I bought a HW97K and it had just been serviced, standard weights were 13.5 ft/lb and logun penatrator's were 14.5, however after a tin mine has settled to 12 and a bit and going to chrono it again after this second tin to make sure its now sub 12 ft/lb.

Ps mine was dieseling a little though

I understand this however I'm not sure what the *correct* way to resolve the problem.

I suppose I'm not even legally allowed to send an overpowered rifle back to be re-tuned.

my TX does a very similar thing
it will fire jsbs/aafield/lazadomes all day long at 11.8 ftlb
but if i feed it on the lighter accupells the power reduces to a consistent 9ftlbs.
however it stays legal no matter what pellets.

i suggest you either get a tin of wasps and fire enough of them off so that the gun is no longer dieselling and then get the gun re-chronoed or send the gun back for a bit of a detune.

I bought a Chrony Beta off **** for £60 + postage was free, I found it to be very usefull tool, try this link

    http://stores.************/D-R-Sport...United-Kingdom

You can get one for £50 but the Beta saves 6 ten shot strings and does a bit more.

(Think the very well known auction site was blatted out by this site)

I had a hw97k, it was very much over with hn ftt, shot very accurate with them but over by a fair bit, i got it turned down quick smart, the cert with the gun showed 11.8ftlb though with aa fields.
HWs are well known to be a bit over when new, I dont know how they get away with it as most ive heard of are well over 12ftlb out of box with certain pellets.

My rapid is set at 11.45 , which gives enough safety margin. i do chrono it from time to time and havent noticed much change.

Yep my 95 is similair, with a 14g pellet it does about 11ftbls with a ftt 15.5 it does 11.39 on average, a bit strange really it should really be better with the light ones but its now consistant around 4-9fps on each shot.
