    Question Grandma's Attic

My Grandad died a couple of years ago and Grandma was clearing the last of his stuff at the weekend, when I went round to visit she said I have something of your Grandad's that you might want......?
Grandma says he bought it back with him from the war and it's been in the attic since then. I have stripped it down but can find no makers name or numbers? It looks worse than it is, the outside being worn and looking its age while the barrel and chambers are in excellent condition inside. I am assuming I can keep it as an antique, but would like any information anyone may have on it.
    Thanks Guys

I'm no expert by any means, but it looks like a Remington New Model Army.

Whether its an Italian copy, I couldn't say.

I concur. And I doubt that your Grandfather brought it back from the war: these date from the American Civil War era.

I'm no expert on UK gun laws, but my understanding is that if it's an antique, you can own it without any license or paperwork.

If it's a modern-made replica, you'll need a firearms license (FAC), and a gun cabinet. Unless you have it deactivated.

hi, i think this is an original remington new model army,i possess an original one and yours looks identical, look on the top flat of the barrel very carefully and see if you can make out any markings.original remintons had the serial no stamped on the frame under the grip . if it is an original you can possess this without licence..cheers greasemonkey

hmm, I don't thik she meant THAT war
It was one of the many things he bought back from the 2nd World war, nothing else like this tho
I can't make out anything on the top of the barrel-unless I get some wire wool on it?
I'll leave it as it is and hang it on the wall.

If it says "Black powder only" on the barrel, its a modern replica

I can't find any marks, name or anything anywhere. I think I may take it to my local gun shop and see if they can shed any light on it. It won't be a replica as Grandad left the army in 1946 and bought this home with him.

When greasmonkey said "on the frame under the grip he didn't literally mean "under the grip" - its on the flat bit of the frame that the grips are screwed to.

The flat bit thats facing the floor when you stand & hold the gun at arms length

I'm surprised that there are NO marks anywhere - whether original or 'later' it will have a number/stamp/factory mark on it somewhere ...

    Not envious at all ......:d

    Cheers

That being the case, it's authentic. Not a replica, and the original old pieces were selling for a pittance then, so no one would have bothered to counterfeit one.

Cheers for that, I thought that would be the case. If anyone could put a value on it for me? But please note it is NOT for for sale. Thanks for all your input.
