    Rabbits Breeding

Do rabbits constantly have young or do they have seasons. Was trying to manage my land so there is always good sport and we dont shoot all the wabbits.

    breedin' like rabbits

In this part of the world rabbits tend to be less frisky from about now until late April ish. They seem to like to breed when the weather is warmer and there is lots of food about.
Look out for fat does from early April, they'll be the ones sitting around, sun bathing, they don't like running when they are full of babies. It's best not to shoot these so you have a good stock over winter.
The best shooting can be from June or July when there are lots of 1/2 to 3/4 grown rabbits about. These are the best eating, nice and tender.
Timings may be a bit earlier in the south.

Rabbits are one of the few animals which can come on heat on demand so they breed whenever conditions are suitable for rearing young, there is no set pattern to go by.

It's all irrelevant though really. If you see a booming population shoot them, if you don't...... don't

Now here's a stunning bit of trivia for yer....

Rabbit fleas don't have any sex hormones of their own. When a rabbit comes in season the hormones in its blood cause the flea to come in season, and so they breed at the same time.
Also the gestation period of the flea is the same as the rabbits, so the baby fleas are born at the same time as the baby rabbits... So each baby rabbit gets its own set of baby fleas.

    Ain't nature wonderful.
