They stand out even more with an oiled finish. My .22 had a really icky varnish on it that had started to craze so I sanded it back, sealed and oiled it. Was going quite well until I put it in one of those fleece lined gunslips and it emerged looking somewhat fluffy...

Hmmm, mebbe that would keep your hands warm in winter- you may just start a fashion there mate

The chequering on mine and the type 01 that i used to own is pressed in and not cut

The Bench Rest lads tend to go for long forends with very square profiles + high cheekpieces. (& they're not too fussed about finish ). That would be the correct chequering for the time, johnbaz.

Battfink - you PROVE that these guns are Collectable .

Although a High Varnish Finish is now considered distasteful , actually, I think its the correct finish for a spring gun. (has anyone considered Talc on the leading hand?).

It looks very like the stock on my Daystate apart from the fact that mine's not a thumbhole...

Regarding Batfink's 52... it was a little rough when she found it so I stripped it down and resprung/resealed it. I had heard people say the '12 ftlb' version was not good unless 'professionally' short-stroked. Maybe ... all I can say is that Batfink's is a great gun after a 'smooth out' and re-lube even though it needed some shortening of the standard spring to bring it down to an acceptable level.
The engineering quality on these rifles is excellent.
    Cheers, Phil
