    Removing coating from BSA rifles

Anyone know what shifts the coating you find on some of the Meteors, Mercuries etc?

Caustic soda shifts most paint finishes, you could give that a try if Nitromors won't do it, which would be my first choice as it's a little more user friendly than caustic soda

If you do have to resort to the caustic, wear eye protection, rubber gloves and old clothes (they may not be wearable again if you have a major spill )

Oh and plug the ends of the barrel and cylinder to protect the insides.

As above - I would think the paint stripper Nitromors should do the job and be first choice

Beware that the caustic soda can be nasty stuff so as advised take great care if trying it. Avoid the fumes if it gets onto alloy

Also the caustic soda will attack alloy/aluminium and result in pitting of surface if left on too long. So be careful with the trigger block on the Mercury

    Don't rule out emery paper/cloth

    Avoid stuff like Cillit Bang.
It was suggested in another section to use this for removing blueing, and it turned my MK1 pistol into a lump of rust. I've now got to drill the plug pin out to clean the insides

I'm happy removing bluing, not a problem and do it all the time. Cillit Bang doesn't get over the threshold 'cos I don't like being shouted at by a prat. To shift blue I'd either use Jenolite rust remover (phosphoric acid) or a quick dip in the acid bath (sulphuric acid).

I've never been sure whether the finish was paint or powder, I've replicated it in the past with Plasticote which would obviously come off with Nitromors or thinners.

Now I'm getting good results with powder coating I'd like to look at sorting out the rather battered Bowkett Meteor that's cowering at the back of one of my cabinets. I'd rather not have to rub it down if I can help it.

That black finish is powder coating or a stove enammeled finish pity the steel is as soft as lead, i know im going to get bricks thrown at me but those 1970's BSA;s were built of worse steel than any relum.

I wouldn't disagree about the quality, lets face it, the metal wasn't good enough to polish and blue.

So that leaves me with the next question, how to remove powder coat or enamel?

Rich - from memory, last time I did this I used Nitromors...
