Have just bought some pyrodex ffg to try in my 45/70 rolling block. Am i right in thinking you use it the same as black powder by volume. IE, fill the case to the same leval as i would normally and slightly compress. I normaly get 55 grns of swiss into each case and that equates to 45 grns pyrodex. Im using a 535 grn (ish!) postell bullet so volume is slightly lower than the 405 round nose flat point bullet. Anyone tried it!! Tim
Not tried it in 45-70, but I use Pyrodex in my Martini Henry. You are correct, it is a volume for volume substitute for black powder. Loading procedures for it are the same as black.
Paul Matthews' book, "Loading The Black Powder Rifle Cartridge" has good info on both Black and Pyrodex loads in the 45-70.
The South of England has 2 good things, the M1 and the A1. Both will take you to Yorkshire.
