    The inset medallion says 'Firebird' to me, but I ain't no expert

    Well its not a 34, 48 or 52 so thats narrowed it down a bit.

    Beech is actually or probably a better wood choice than Walnut, Stephen, at least for a Springer (true even in "pre-sustainable wood supplies" days, as it is now).

    The chequering looks to be pressed rather than cut, which may imply 'an age'.

    Looks like its for a Diana (Millard Bros) Series 70 Model 71. Hiller "Collector's Guide to Air Rifles" 4th edition p.117

    One possible extra clue, Stephen, would be...
    is the 'medallion' actually plastic, not metal?

    This would point to Milbro, according to 'Red Feather' on Dianawerks.

    just did an image search for series 70 model 71 and it's different to that.if it helps it has fluting coming back from the rear of the trigger guard and has the number 1742 stamped into the wood in front of the trigger guard.
