    Hi,
Made between June 1913 and February 1914. Despatched from the factory between June 1913 and September 1915. All were Standards .177 and .22. Most despatches mid 1913.
The S in the serial number denotes a double safety sear.
I'm not very good at values, between £100 and £200 depending on condition. It looks nice to me but I'm not an expert.

BSA No1 Improved Model D, year of manufacture ?

    Hi Dogs body and Silvia,

Im new to the forum on the basis of having just aquired a vintage BSA which used to be my great granfathers.
Im interested to know if its possible to tell the date of manufacture from the serial number which is S76973 (The last digit could be a 3,9 or a 5 as the metal is pitted).
It is, I believe an early model D .177 from the side slot release button on the loading arm.
The stock is chequed and has no butt plate , just cut wood grip in the butt with an oval screw down cover over the stock securing bolt hole. It has Load stamped next to the pellet hole and the BSA 3 rifles stamped behind the rear sight.
The trigger guard is held on with 2 screw and is made from solid steel. There appears to be a small letter c stamped on the main body just where the rear of the trigger guard meets the body.
    Any help, much appreciated.
    regards
    Jon

BSA No1 Improved Model D, year of manufacture ?

    Hi Dogs body and Silvia,
I also meant toa sk where I can get a replacement main washer ?
Do you recommend leather or a modern PTFE one?
It appears to be about 28 mm diameter.
    regards
    Jon

    Hi Jon,
Sounds an interesting rifle. Nice to have your great grandfathers shooting iron !
S76973 was part of the batch of rifles made between July 1914 and Sept 1917 and dispatched from the factory between July 1914 and December 1917.
However the dates can be narrowed down a little as the standard patterns like yours were dispatched up until December 1916.
The WW1 era produced rifles like yours always seem to be very evocative rifles.
You will find a washer at either John Knibbs or Chambers airgun spares on the web.
    Cheers
