Been looking at the above rifle in my local shop. Seems pricey, but is a very pointable nicely balanced rifle. Can anyone add to this? Its up for £400by the way.
My mate has one in 0.22 and I love it, smooth, accurate... I even love the way it looks, quality rifle![]()
Where did we go wrong? (Jeff Lynne)
You do'nt mind the price and the forward balance, then yes its a very good springer. Like a 95 but with more potential for long range accuracy due to stock fit and reduced barrel flip.

I have one in .177 and it's fantastic, extremely well made and very accurate.
I found mine a little light, so have put it in a custom stock to add a bit of bulk. Just as accurate as any of my pre-charged guns, just takes a bit more concentration.
In my opinion the best break barrel currently on sale
Andy..
the 98 is a good gun no doubt but it still needs a tune up however there is a better rifle that some people regard as a bit of a cannon..I of course refer to the Weihrauch 80.
The 80 with a short stroked piston and a good polish/fettle is just as good as the 98 with 1 big advantage...it is built to withstand 20ft.lb+ pressures so it won't even break a sweat with the tuning/modifications to improve its 12ft.lbs performance but if you have a few hundred spare a full lazaglide tune makes the 80 even better...the 1 question is can you manage the weight of this legendary Weihrauch break barrel?..if you can then you have 1 hell of a rifle![]()
There is a lot of threads about HW springers at the moment. And i keep hearing how much tougher the 80 is over the 95. The barrel, breach block and pivot pin are the same. The 80s cylinder is wider and has thicker walls. But really to what kind of treatment would you have to subject the 95 and 80to expose the relative weakness of the 95. Its still 10 times tougher than most PCPs. Do'nt use your gun as a tyre lever or cricket bat and i cant see the supposed benefit of the 80's relative durability.

My '98 is my favourite break barrel springer. The adjustable cheek piece allows you to fit a scope with high mounts, The pull to trigger length is shorter than most older HWs. Unfortunately, like all new HWs, they need the spring sorting out, and a degrease and relube.

The ox is slow, but the earth is patient.
I love mine
It shoots wonderfully, with about the same recoil as any HW, but so much less muzzle flip meaning a very accurate, straightforward shot. It is also significantly less twangy than my 97k, perhaps just luck - as I've never tried anyone else's 98.
On top of all that it looks fantastic - pretty light as well![]()

My mate just got one of these. I'm desperately hoping he wants to sell it soon. If you want front heavy go for the 77 but I fancy complementing my 77 with this 98 for standing shots and rough shooting. A beautifully balanced gun.
Get it! Then give it what it deserves.....A V.Mach tune![]()
The HW98 is my favourite break barrel no question, mine is in .177 cal.
Old local saying,
You can stay in till you know nowt, or you can go out till yerve got nowt.
ive got a .177 hw98 full lazaglide/don robinson stock which is 1 of my best springers but can be front heavy.i believe mine has some sought of lead weight in the butt to balance things.the standard stock is very comfortable and i think i seem to remember being told its the only hw built with a match barrel???

Very nice rifles but I'd rather have a Webley Longbow or Tomahawk![]()
I won the 2007/08 southern hunters recoiling class with a 98 , the rifle was standard straight out the box 98 , my competitor was using some v-Mach jobbie tunned to the nines , the resuts speak volumes regarding the 98 !
Go for it mate !![]()
