Random Pellets (Wingers) I think They Are Called

I am just wondering about random Pellets.
    The rifle I am using is a HW100sk 0.177
I am getting a good 8mm to 10mm Grouping at 30yards but every now and again one pellet will be off by an inch which is wreaking my grouping I know its not me as I am testing out at the moment rested and I can see the pellet fall off the cross hairs.

I have checked my pellets and they do range in weight from about 5.333g upto 5.600g that's a good 0.300g but on average they are 5.475 i would be surprised if weight would effect accuracy at 30 yards.

I also make sure the pellets are in good condition not squashed or distorted.

I started weighing the pellets and making sure there are no major weight differences but I think this is being overly anal and Boy is it boring checking a tin of 500

What other Factors can effect a pellets accuracy ? not including the rifle or Wind Or Rifle Pressure As I stay in between 200bar and 90bar

The two types of pellet I am using are JSB Exact Diabolo 4.52 and FX 4.52

    Thanks
    Craig

Any variation from norm in the pellet head will cause problems. I use JSB 4.53s in my HW100 with very good results. (On a rest , in the field.... well t6hat's different.)

You do mean 0.548 grams of course...

An inch out is quite "off", suggest trying different pellets.

    Fliers

Hi you say you get up to 1" fliers which is a lot! how many shots are you calling a group? also are the fliers all in one direction.
I used H&N ftts in my new AA 510. A pellet that all my guns have liked and got similar results to you, ie the occasional flier" but not an inch". Changed to AA field and problem cured.
    My 177 HW100 was best on H&Ns.

I have noticed the weight in the pellet can be set in different places. Like more back than the middle of the tip. I find its in cheap ones though so.... you get what you pay for!

Ooppss Added 5g to a pellet yes I meant 0.548.

Ill have to have a look at some other Pellets When I say 1 inch I infact I meant 1cm Having one of those days mixing up Imperial and Metric and adding 5g to a pellet Hummm I might just want to start the thread again

So Is a 1cm flier about normal ?

Rest the rifle, follow through the shot, slowly squeeze the trigger & so on.
If you getting fliers It's either you or the pellet.
Make sure It's the pellet before you start trying others.
Get a couple of cushions off the sofa or a rolled up coat, whatever.
Rest the end of the air tube, not the position you'd normally use for a bipod.
Lay prone, nice & comfy, gently squeeze off 10 shots.
Sqeeze the trigger so gently you don't want to fire the gun but eventually it does.
One of two things will show up, the pellets are grouping or they are not.
Or maybe you will see the cross hair waveing around all over the place, by slowing things down to a crawl you'll notice you may be moveing or twitching, that will be missed when your in rush mode.
Look at the target but concentrate on the cross hairs.
If the cross hairs are manic It's possibly you, If all is steady try all the pellets you can get your hands on.
Rabbit Stew, no artificial additives except lead.
IF THE MUD REACHES YOUR KNEES GET OUT OF THE FIELD QUICK.

    1 cm

    That's better.
I bet it's you pulling the shot's If you can see a 1cm flier as it strikes through your scope you must have exeptional sight.
    Try more water with it!

    I have the same problem.

Usually when I fire a whole magazine (8 Shots in my FX Cyclone) I usually get one pellet that has moved up and to the right by about 10-15mm.

As it is consistently the same direction, I assume its me pulling the shot..

    need more practice...

I used to be a Marksman in the Army Now it was a good 17 years ago and I have not held a rifle since so I maybe forgetting how I used to do things and I did not grown as much when laying or sitting.
I ended up shooting a camera instead but the rules are still the same when using a long lens as shooting a rifle

I think Ill get myself a Rifle Rest to make sure its not me and they are handy to work on the rifle also.

I was just used to pointing a rifle and the round going where i wanted it to go ok 7.62 but it went alot further than the 0.177 pellet but still follows the same rules.

Here is a Target I did the Other Day at 30 yards each Target is 75mm

wont a hot barrel make a difference? How about a "dirty" one. I know target rifle shooters who will pop down the zero range to put 5 rounds down to dirty their barrel and burn off any excess oil. Dont know if air rifles are the same.

All things considered, I dont see much wrong with your groups or your shooting, from a kneeling position!

Minor errors due to position, also imperfections in the pellets, whatever - could account for the one that seems to get away a teeny bit. I don't see a "problem", but a challenge, as all of us always contend with each time we pull the trigger.

I have a barrel here that i had put a lot of work into making it fit into the gun i was building and it did this when i tested it, 5 shots bang on and then a flier, i took a mop the the barrel with T cut on it and spent half an hour polishing the inside of the barrel, it was worth a try if it meant the work i had put it was not wasted, the results where good, it did maybe 100 shots before a flier, so i came to the conclusion that the fliers where caused by lead build up in a rough barrel, either some lead sticking to a pellet or the build up damaging a pellet, whatever, so now i just clean it after each use and it keeps getting better. It was a brand new barrel and i had 3 of them so i needed to find the reason, i think it was just the lack of a nice polished finish in the bore.

    Cheers Simon.
