when shooting differnt ranges you either dial in the scope(rotating the turret to ajust the point of impact) to the range or hold over/under(using say mil dots each dot will represent a differnt range depending on how its set up so you aim using that dot).

if you think the target is at say 50 yards you dial in for 50yards or hold over and take the shot,
if the target is in fact at 47 yards a .177 may still hit it however a .22 may not due to the loopy-er trajectory.
so you need to be more accurate in your judgements with the .22, the gun itself will be just as accurate.
