Is it new, has it been unused for a while?
If either of the above it might just need some fresh oil on the mechanism, or a bit of use,
Regards,
Nick
Hi all.
Just got my first proper pistol, an HW45 (.177), and can't wait to get it settled in.
Just one thing, during the first few shots it seemed to stop working by not cocking properly; the sear didn't seem to be engaging.
After a few more goes, it seemed fine again.
I was wondering if the sear mechanism is sensitive to position of the gun, as I think it started happening when I tried bracing the pistol against my knee to cock it more easily, so pointing downwards to the floor.
Has anyone else experienced something similar, or know why it may have happened?
I'm glad I chose to give pistols a go though, really fun and a bit easier to find the time and place to do it.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi.
Cheers for the suggestion.
It's brand new, happened during the first 10 or so shots.
Got a fresh tin to put through it tomorrow afternoon, so will keep a close eye on it.

It's highly probable just the grease applied on assembly, the sear mechanism is delicate & lightly sprung and could initially stick on a blob of grease, very likely it will bed in nicely.
When I got mine they had only just been released in the UK (yeah, I'm that old ) and the shop was running pellets through all the new guns, probably not to bed them in but because they wanted to play

Thanks Nick.
Nice to hear an experienced opinion.
Yeah, the manual states in bold text that it takes "100's of shots" for the gun to bed in, so hopefully it's just a case of early days.

Don't you consider the HW 40 to be a proper pistol?
In any case, now you're all set up for the UBC's 6 yard, and 10 meter, competitions!

hi. actually, I guess I do consider it a proper pistol. what I meant is the kick from the 45 makes it feel much more... challenging? anyway, I can't wait to get some practice in, and get involved in some competing. I haven't checked yet, but presumably the rules to the ubc 6 and 10 yard comps are posted here somewhere? may as well start as I mean to go on.

Great site, really impressive.
I think I'll set up a practice range in the garage, this afternoon.

shammo congratulations on getting a '45 I've had 2 so far the last one is second hand (2 WEEKS OLD) the previous owner got the pistol purely on the "fearsome" reputation it has, he fired 100 shots out of it then sold it as he "didn't expect it to kick so much" needles to say i got a very good bargain the gun hadn't even bedded its self in yet!
TIP if you lube pellets don't use oil, if the pellets are to be used in a springer, i did, every shot dieseled as a result of the oil in the skirt of the pellet(a 12 bore had a tighter grouping at 45 m than my '45 at 10 m)

Cheers mate.
I love it.
I spent a hundred shots or so this afternoon, breaking it in, and had a 6m range set up in the garage.
Thanks for the tip about lubed pellets though, I did notice a fair amount of dieseling, and come to think of it, it was with some lubed pellets. I had some oil-lubed powapells left over and thought to use those before cracking open a new tin. Maybe that explains the random flyers
I heard that they diesel a bit during breaking in anyway, so thought nothing of it.
Funny thing though, full power seemed a bit more accurate for me, but hard to be certain, so soon, as I'm still too inconsistent at the moment.
Loving pistol shooting though, easier to arrange a shoot, MUCH harder for me than rifles, and really rewarding to get a reasonable group.
On the lookout for a backup 2nd hand one too, maybe for a shoulder-stock project.
Awesome pistol

why the hell do you want to spoil a nice PISTOL like a hw 45 by putting a shoulder stock on it and yes pistol shooting is THE hardest of all shooting sports and possibly the most rewarding. if you want to lube pellets for a springer try a wax based product furniture polish, at 6 m you might find half power hits higher than full power (something to do with the spin of the pellet. as it leaves the barrel it spins, it also spirals as it rises above the sight line, then falls.) don't believe me? shoot a accupell with the sun on your back if your lucky you will see the pellet go as accupels have a mirrored base.)

haha, I hear you. At least I'll be sating my curiosity on a backup pistol as opposed to my one and only Just curious to see just how accurate it can be long range, say 30+ yards.
Interesting what you say about the half power having a higher poi as I noticed that too; was almost 2 inches at 6 meters compared to full power. I was also using Powapells with the same smooth base so could just spot the pellet on its way.
I think I'll stick to full power for now, and at least until it's properly bedded in.
As for pellet-lubing, I think I'll leave it unless it makes a big difference, keep it simple
Any recommendations on action-lubes for the mainspring, cocking arms, internal parts etc...?
Thanks again for the tips, really appreciate it.

a VERY thin smear of molly grease on the internals and a DROP of good oil on the pivot points both available from good gun shops every-where
