    One thing that always makes me wonder...did American Civil War cavalrymen, Old West cowboys and lawmen, etc., use filler? Wads? Grease? If so, what kind? Is there documentation that they had chainfires?

    Thats Always a question Dad & I ask !

    .......and what about when the guys were out on a Cattle drive in bad rain/storms & then expected to draw a capped gun & expect it to save their lives !

    I always wondered if they DID seal nipples & ball with candlewax or sbeeswax to keep them waterproof (ish !)

    Hope you & your good lady are bearing up !

    Thanks, she's on the mend , but hasn't felt well today.

    Cynic that I am, I doubt that these black powder users of old really were able to give their shooting irons the care that modern shooters insist they require.
