I had an hour to kill so I went for a walk on my new permission. Saw a group of bunnies laying under a bush, so successfully stalked to about 25 yards. Took my first ever shot at live quarry and ended up with 6 runners, who sprinted off into the bushes about 10 yards away, so I presume I missed!
Sat there for a few more minutes cursing my luck (and cr@p shooting) and was about to head off home when one hopped back out into the middle of the field and eyed me up... I didn't miss this time, and had a very tasty rabbit in cider dish for lunch
The only downside was although my gun was not on show I was spotted through a gap in the hedge by a road, and had some abuse shouted at me by some silly cow driving by in a 4x4... presumably as she headed off to her factory farmed Sunday roast... Never mind, I'll have to watch out for that!
All in all, feeling rather pleased with myself![]()
If your gun was not on show why the abuse ! were you wearing some sort of dodgy clothing![]()

Hi Kris,
What sort of gun are you using? If it's a PCP I would recommend a bi-pod, you certainly won't miss at 25yards then. Also what calibre, maybe if it is a 0.22 and your rangefinding was out a bit then that would explain the missed shot?
Well done on getting your first bunny though and ignore the lady, they are a funny bunch down in Essex![]()

I think if you re read his post he stalked a group of rabbits missed his shot and about six scarpered ! so 1 out of 2 shots ,he can be forgiven for missing his first shot at live quarry probably nerves.
Well done on your first if you can stalk to 25 yards there should be many more to follow.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone - I must admit I was a bit nervous, I sat there with the rabbit in my sight for a good minute before I was confident enough to take the shot - which then missed!!!
I did re-zero before I went out, but perhaps I should do that in the field when I arrive? My gun is a Fenix 400s springer with quite a recoil, a bipod is definitely on the shopping list, although I was resting on an old wooden cow trough at the time.
And the woman in the 4x4 was a hound![]()
Don't get a bi-pod for a springer it won't help. Maybe because you were resting on the cow trough is why you missed. You need to always have a springer in your hands, gently holding it in position. Put your hand on the cow trough and the springer rests lightly in your hand, that way it is allowed to recoil naturally![]()

Congrats on your 1st bunny, if you practice aimimg & pulling the trigger within 10 secs you'll find your sucsess rate improves, the longer you hold on aim the less chance of hitting the target as you waver more.
After reading this thread i dont think i'll ever look at rabbits the same way, i saw one today down a country road, and it actually mad me hungry, i've never eaten rabbit, but i'd imagine its quite nice :P
congratulations on your first rabbit, chances are you will never forget it.
