    Removing camo paint job

    Hi everyone

I have just bought a second hand AAS400 Carbine. It has been 'real tree camo' painted.

I was wondering if there is anyway to safely remove this without damaging the stock or metals of the gun.

    Thanks for your replies,
    Lewis

A decent paint stripper will remove the paint. Remove the stock from the action first though!

Be gentle when you remove the paint (try not to sand it down, I used a cloth with mine) as you will have more work getting the wood finish nice.

Did you ask what the stock underneath was like? I would suspect a scruffy stock was painted up

Thanks for your swift reply Gasman!

I have the same feeling as you do about the stock but i'm contemplating removing the varnish/laquer and re-doing it. I don't mind a scruffy stock as it's going to be used to targets/hunting so it's only going to get worse. I'm just not a fan of the paint job.

If doing the action as well as stock may i ask the reasons for seperating them? Sorry i'm new to PCP's and their workings.

    Regards,

    Thumbs down

ah ok didnt realise the action was camo too!

Well if thats the case I would not be able to tell you the effect of paint stripper on the rifle blueing! someone on here will though! I would guess that it would be fine but if it stripped it then you have a major pain in the neck....
Looked into reblueing and its not cheap, and the home blue stuff is erm.... not great!

Yeah it is unfortunately. Thanks very much for your help. I've searched for what i can and i'm still not sure of the answer. If commercial paint strippers will work on the stock that will do for now.

I've heard some people mention Acetone. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Nitromors paint and varnish remover is what you need. It shouldn't harm the blueing, but it will burn your skin. Be careful you don't splash yourself with it.

Would it be ok for the stock as well? I don't want to damage the wood or ruin the finish.

    Cheers,

Is it paint or has it been dipped by Hydrographics?

    Got a picture?

Paint stripper on the stock, use one of those soft suede brushes you would use on a shoe, not the stiff brass ones.

That's a picture of the gun. It's paint, it literally peels off but slowly of course.

Do i need to use two different products for the stock and the action then?

    Regards,
    Lewis

P.S sorry for having no understanding of this!!

Nitromors is safe on the wood as well. The only thing it will eat away is plastic, but no worries on a gun. I use it on all my stocks when I strip them of their coatings.
